While I do think Genoni at his best is/was comparable to an NHL starting goalie in performance, I do worry however that he is not quite on his best anymore. He looked a bit shaky WC and he is also not the youngest anymore (not super old for a goaltender either though). There is also the size factor wich he can compensate for the most part but with that many NHL precision shooters it might be a bigger issue than usual. Its not a coincidence that most NHL goalies measure at least 6.2 inches. The level of the average shooting ability is just so much higher that it makes sense to cover as much net as possible. Hopefully my intuition is wrong though and Genoni will have the tournament of his life. We surely are going to need it.

My guess is:

Meier-Hischier-Fiala
Hofmann-Suter-Niederreiter
Andrighetto-Kurashev-Baertschi
Malgin-Haas-Corvi
Bertschy

Josi-Weber
Kukan-Siegenthaler
Mueller-Diaz
Sbisa

Genoni
Berra

I don't see Sbisa and Weber making the team anymore, barred some very good seasons in Zurich and I do not know where will Sbisa play next season (provided he stays healthy).
Suter will probably not play center very often, it's pretty packed there with Hischier Haas Corvi and Bertschy

While Olympics have the best players they also have "easier" path to quarterfinals than at WC. At OG you basically can suck for three games and then win pre-quarter game and you are in it, while at WC you are done after you go 0-3 (Canada making lone exepction with all other results going their way). So, for Genoni most important game will be pre-quarter game and if not for too many upsets Swiss opponent there could be Denmark/Latvia, in that case he doesn't even have to be that good.

Genoni has been a starter for Switzerland since 2017 (plus 2015, and many games in 2011). During that span he had strong games against teams like Canada in 2017, Finland, Canada and Sweden in 2018, Canada and Russia in 2019, and Russia in 2021. All teams with more firepower than Denmark, The Czech Republic and likely the opponent for the first elimination game will send to Beijing.

Berra hasn't been as good lately, but he did the job last year despite a subpar season. Club performances are not a good indicator of how a player will do in international hockey.

Switzerland is likely going to face Germany or Slovakia, with Latvia/Denmark being less likely. Germany is highly likely going to finish with 3 points in 3rd place, guaranteeing seed #7, #8 or #9. Switzerland is likely finishing 3rd in their group as well. The 2nd and 3rd-best 3rd-placed teams face each other in the pre-quarters.

And in any case, Switzerland are not going to be huge favorites in any of these match-ups. To say that the Swiss goalie doesn't have to be good is a little weird.

And not to be that guy who only posts a hot take for the sake of stirring the pot, but it does surprise me that the Swiss are probably going to be ranked 11th in the goalie department, not that much in front of China, assuming Lazushin is their starting goalie.

I didn't express myself correctly. If he faces Denmark/Latvia he probably won't have to have game of his life.

Prime Hiller was significantly better than current Genoni, I don’t know many international hockey pundits who would debate that fact.
I did not say that prime Hiller wasn't better than current Genoni, all I said is that prime Hiller is not significantly better than prime Genoni. I wonder where you saw Genoni in his prime I doubt your statistical sample is sufficient

No chance for Brunner? He is doing good in NLA

His time has passed. Its not 2013 anymore. There are a handful of players who are as good as him, younger and less injury prone fighting for his roster spot. He is also no Andres Ambühl who was always part of the NT and a character guy that can play all situations additional to still being close to his prime.

A little bit more probable than Brunner, but he also would need quite a few injuries to get consideration.

Swiss Federation confirms Josi, Hischier and Meier as part of the "each-nation-presents-3-players"-pr action.
They also confirm that they already submitted their longlist to the IIHF but that they won't reveal who's on this list and who's not.

I also doubt Brunner will get an invitation. I would definately consider C. Baltisperger - depending on how his season goes after the bad injury in January. But he brings a skillset and playing style to the team that can be very useful against grittier teams. I love his net front presence and his hitting is quite unique in Switzerland.

Switzerland will play two preparation tournaments, one in November, one in December. Fischer will play two completly different teams.

Roster for the tournament in Germany:

Philip Wüthrich
Ludovic Waeber
Joren Van Pottelberghe

Santeri Alatalo
Yannick Weber
Mirco Müller
Dominik Schlumpf
Elia Riva
Lukas Frick
Ramon Untersander
Dominik Egli

Andres Ambühl
Luca Fazzini
Inti Pestoni
Alessio Bertaggia
Lino Martschini
Valentin Nussbaumer
Enzo Corvi
Nando Eggenberger
Calvin Thürkauf
Simon Moser
Joel Vermin
Sven Andrighetto
Noah Rod

First call for Wüthrich, Waeber and Nando Eggenberger.

Meanwhile Phlipp Furrer announced his retirment from the national team. 101 games, two olympic games, one silver medal and probably the most famous goal in the history of Swiss ice hockey (although he scored the wrong side).
IMHO a very underrated player.

Pretty strong roster for the November break, especially the defense.

With almost half of the regular season played I can't see any unexpected player making the olympic squad, but guys Waeber, Eggenberger or Thürkauf may have a shot at the WC.

depending on JVPs season, is it possible he’s part of the tandem? Would need to assume he’s important to their international teams going forward

Yeah, I'd guess there is a good possibility that JVP is getting the #3 spot in Bejing.

People, insiders, media should talk much more about Timo Meier this year. He's been pretty incredible thus far! One of the best forwards in the NHL this season for sure. Great impact on his teammates, great shooter, great at transition. Keep this way, Timo! Underrated player. https://t.co/vcipdXti1f

100% - after a really weak season last year it is great to see him turning it arond now. He will definately be a key player in the Olympics for us.

I hope to see a bit more production out of guys like Hischier, Fiala and Nino but I am confident we will dress a competitive team. The key will be goaltending, maybe it is worth considering Schmid for the 3rd spot, altough I doubt he will get an invite.

Akira Schmid is leading the AHL in save % and goals against right now. I am not sure if it makes sense to call him up as a number 3 goaltender though. I dont know if the AHL is even taking an break during the Olympics. If not it would probably better for him to stay in Utica and play as many games as possible.

Could you poach McTavish? Born in Zurich and likely not making Canada soon if ever
