Who would win a best of 7 series, a Team made up of current NHL Captains vs a Team of Current NHL assistant captains. I know goalies play a big part of the equation, but assume they are neglected from this equation. I would to like see how people would structure their teams.

Here are some ideas of what this would look like (it's not a ranking don't get mad at me):

Team C

Landeskog-McDavid-Stone
Tkachuk-Crosby-Matthews
Ovechkin-Barkov-Larkin
Kopitar-Hischier-Keller

Hughes-Spurgeon
Josi-Dahlin
Hedman-Gudas

Team A

Tkachuk-Hughes-Marner
Forsberg-MacKinnon-Pastrnak
Panarin-Draisaitl-Kucherov
Aho-Hintz-Wilson

Werenski-Fox
Heiskanen-Makar
Morrissey-Parayko

Hot take, I'm going with Team A. Not a ton of defensemen are captains, and Hedman-Gudas are way too old and slow for this shit.

Pretty predictable result, seeing as though there's over twice as many alternate captains as there are captains and so there's more talent to choose from.
That's what I thought initially. Then I saw Crosby, McDavid, and Ovechkin in the same lineup and I was like "oh shit."

Then I saw the defense and I was like "nah I was right the first time."

I actually agree that team alternate looks better on paper than team captain.

The goaltending could turn the tides in favor of either team, but getting into that would get really weird since goaltenders are not permitted to serve as on-ice captains/alternates in the NHL (there are a few leagues that do allow this, such as the NCAA - but they might have stopped allowing it - but they're few and far between).

I actually don't think its a hot take. You would assume Team Captain would be better, but on paper, the star power is similar (the C's have McDavid, Crosby, Matthews and Ovi but the A's have Mackinnon, Draisaitl and Kucherov to sort of balance that). And as you said, the blue line for team Assistant is much better.

Luongo was unofficially Vancouver's captain and Lundqvist was an honorary alternate captain when the Rangers played in Sweden.

Those two in their prime is who I would go with, just for fun.

I think Lundvqist in his prime edges out Luongo in his prime, but only slightly. We could just call goaltending a draw then, in which case team alternate still looks better than team captain.

What I was thinking about in my first post is, to use current goaltenders for the sake of example, if you did an extreme example of putting Stuart Skinner behind team alternate and Connor Hellebuyck (let's assume his regular season form here) behind team captain, then team alternate likely finds themselves in the situation of having to outscore their goaltending problem. I don't think they have enough of a firepower advantage to do that against team captain. That's not to say they don't have a firepower advantage, because they do, I just don't think it would be enough of an advantage.

Maybe we treat it like both teams have their goalie pulled and have a permanent sixth attacker. ;)

Looks pretty good. I’d probably swap Eichel for Panarin though.

And tbh I’m not sure J Hughes has what it takes to be 1C in a matchup like this, if 4 nations is any indication

Strange how there’s no room for Suzuki on Team C

You are aware he’s a PPG+ centreman on a very weak roster, right?

Captain America, Captain Planet, Captain Ahab, Captain Canada, Captain Morgan. Who else am I missing? Yeah these guys would wipe the floor with the assistants.

Lundqvist is noticeably better looking than Luongo, so team alternate would definitely look better with Hank in net. ;)
