WC: Team Latvia 2025 Roster Talk

This is a very glass-half-full as opposed to half-empty kind of take.

Gudlevskis indeed seems to be at the absolute peak of his career which might make him even better than some out-of-form NHL goalies like Grubauer. But... Behind him are 2 Slovak league goalies. We don't know if Kristers is capable of delivering Silovs-level performance. There is a reason why NHL teams mostly rotate the goalies between back-to-backs. Not to mention playing numerous back-to-backs in a short period of time at age 32. One goalie might be enough but it's still a considerable weakness.

Team's best defenseman is missing, meaning Latvia won't even have 2 pairs of decent quality. You can say it is "as usual" but the usual is a clear and obvious weakness of the Latvian NT. We are going to see guys like Komuls, Tumanovs, Cibulskis taking regular shifts.

Same goes for the centers. It's not that Latvia is missing x. y, z guy. It's that the guys replacing them are at the Slovak league level. With the addition of Texier, France certainly has better centers. Austria has better centers. Slovakia has better centers. The only team Latvia can legitimately compete with at center (unless Abols comes) is Slovenia.

This is a very weak team by the Latvian NT standard. And it is absolutely fine if the goal is to avoid relegation but if the goal is a medal, as we have seen is possible to achieve with most of the best players on board, this team has no chance. Because truly, if you take the sum of things, this team is only clearly better than Slovenia. Austria, Slovakia, France - too close to call. Those teams have strengths exactly where Latvia has weaknesses.

In general, I'm confused how this is "not a weak team by any means". When it is weak at defense and it is VERY weak at center. It has NHL players being replaced by guys that are one step above the bottom tier of European pros. Guys that would look right at home at the D1B level. If this is not a very weak team, what is?
The bronze team had no Blueger, no Girgensons, no Merzlikins, so it essentially was as far from the best team, as this years team is from them, since Latvia misses Abols, Balinskis and Silovs.

I agree that playing Silovs every game was an unusual desicion and 32 year old Gudlevskis probably wont be able to pool it off, but I dont think the gap is as big, and the two Slovak league goalies are two of the best this league has to offer and are absolutely capable of taking some of the load.

While no one argues that Balinskis is the best D Latvia has to offer, during the Bronze run he had just 2 assists and +2 in 10 games. Freibergs, for example, had 1+3 and a +5. Its not like Balinskis is carying every Latvia game, and without him, top pairs of Jaks - Rubins and Freibergs - Zile is good enough and I dont agree that they are not of decent quality.

While Latvia has no centers on the level of Kasper or Texier, Im not sure why playing "Slovak league level" bottom liners means Latvia is on the same level as Austria with 17 ICEHL players or France with 12 League Magnus players.

Merzlikins is just an addition by subtraction for the Latvian NT, sadly that's just how it is. Not having him indeed means almost nothing. And almost the same applies to Girgensons, although he would no doubt be a useful cog in a machine, he was never really a key player for Latvia unlike Abols, Balinskis and Silovs.

Also the math itself, "as far from the best team, as this years team is from them" is just not true since for countries with a limited player pool, replacing a few players is relatively easy because you just move the similar quality players up the depth chart. Like, missing Merzlikins is meaningless. Missing Girgensons means Kenins or Dzierkals get moved up the ladder. But if you miss another 3 guys, it means Batna is your new 1st line center. The weight of each loss isn't an arithmetic progression, it's a geometric one.

In Balinskis case, it wasn't his job to produce points. His job was to play the tough matchups and to prevent Latvia from getting completely buried in their own end. So the fact that he finished with a positive +/- at all is admirable. Freibergs, on the other hand, I think we all know what he can offer both offensively and defensively. Let's face it, he is the defensive version of Roberts Bukarts. He was great for Zlin, he moved to the good Extraliga teams where he flopped without contributing at any end of the ice, he then tried himself at the KHL and was basically a complete waste of space. Now he carved himself a decent if unspectacular role for the decent Extraliga team but is that good enough at the WC level? As I've said, sure it is enough if the goal is to avoid relegation. But does it move the needle towards the quarterfinals?

Just because some players do play in the ICEHL doesn't mean they are "ICEHL-level" players. Guys like Haudum, Lebler, Schneider can and have played abroad. So when you add Kasper, Baumgartner, Rohrer, Zwerger to that mix it turns out those "ICEHL-level" guys are there to play bottom line roles as well. Meaning Austrian top-6, the guys who play almost 2/3 of the game, is nominally better than the Latvian top-6. And the bottom lines are a toss-up and they play a limited time anyway.

Now I'm not saying Austria has a stronger team than Latvia. Latvians clearly have an edge in goal and on defense but still, it's very close. Both teams have their advantages and disadvantages rather than one clearly outclassing the other. And the same kind of logic applies to France as well. Sure France is still weaker on paper but is a win in the game against them beyond doubt?

Also quietly slipping through the cracks of this conversation is the absence of Indrasis, who, judging strictly by this club season alone, would still be the third-best winger on the team and, by extension, quite likely the third-best offensive forward. In reality, I understand, nobody rates him that highly but he is still another considerable loss.

Well yeah, whatever the official excuse is, judging from the massive drop-off in production in the playoffs, he probably wasn't feeling too good physically last couple of months of the season.

Cant argue with that. I really like Indrasis, but I focused on the NHL guys in the discussion. His chemistry with Bukarts will surely be missed.

Grigals is moving to Saipa, big step up for him. Hopefully he succeeds, with Punnenovs and Kalnins out of the picture the goalie depth is not what it used to be.

I kinda missed it, why is Punnenovs out of the picture?

Maybe out of the picture is too harsh of a statement but his 2 most recent seasons were pretty bad and he turns 31 in a few weeks so I don't expect full bounceback from him anymore. He just not as good as he once was.

I would have agreed with you last year, but this year he had 22 games in NL with above 0.9 save percentage. This is pretty respectable, even if he wasn't a starter this year.

In case there are any Latvia supporters that look for a ticket to the Latvia vs. Sweden game in Stockholm tomorrow.

I have 2 tickets for the game, but cannot go myself due to a work trip which is a bummer.

I would like to make 2 fans happy by offering the tickets at the original price (100 Euro per ticket).

It is block A4, row 4, so close to the action.

The tickets are mobile tickets and I can easily transfer them via the official app.

Please let me know if interested and feel free to spread the word.

Best regards

- Fabian

If you were to choose Latvias kits? Before you had black shorts and helmets. Now it's this all wine red/ purple nuance. With that said, I like your "Red" or purple the most of all nations wearing somewhat red jerseys.

But I wonder if they would look even cooler with black shorts especially. Or otherwise only a black helmet. Because the nuance of the shorts doesn't look identical to the jersey. It's like its darker or even more purple?

Where is Namejs? Does he only show up to discuss medal prospects now?
I would say too ashamed after his u18 prediction was extremely wrong. Which is sad, I would like to read his analysis of the current championship.

Wait a second.... I completely missed that Abols got 1-way contract from the Flyers. I would just like to say on his behalf:

NAMEJS WAS RIGHT.

Now that's a change-up.

Interesting though, if the Flyers are seriously intending him to play in the NHL next year or just fine with paying him to be in the AHL and calling up if need be.
