Erkka Westerlund was also very good. Loved Summanen too, but he rubbed some of the NHLers the wrong way when he wouldn't pray at Niinimaa's altar as he was fast declining

Agreed.

Because I'm bored I'll list some good head coaches who had success in the Finnish National team (juniors included) or who had exceptional potential as NT head coach after the year 2000 below. Pretty much all of us Finns know these things, but this is mostly for our international friends.

Good coaches that could be the head coaches of team Finland now:
Jukka Jalonen - duh
Antti Pennanen
Kari Jalonen

Junior team gold coaches :
Jussi Ahokas - U18 gold and U20 gold in Canada & USA tournaments. What he did was unheard of in Finnish Hockey. It was always harder to win on North-American soil than in other tournaments. I'd list him on the list above if his current club TPS did a bit better this season, but his stocks dropped a bit. He'll be a future contender for the NT head coach, I'm sure.
Tommi Niemelä - U18 gold
Karri Kivi - U20 gold

2000-2010:
Hannu Aravirta - it was a different era during his best years in terms of player material. We needed him back then. He played an important role as a long time head coach in making Finnish national team what it is today.
Erkka Westerlund - also appeared after 2010. Might still have what it takes to be the current NT coach, but I don't think that he wants to.
Raimo Summanen - was fired too early, but he had huge potential and he showed some of that in the KHL.

Biggest disappointments:
Lauri Marjamäki - good club coach though. Horrible on the NT.
Jukka Rautakorpi - great career as a club coach. Horrible on the NT.
Raimo Helminen/Raipe - he was basically thrown to the wolves when he had very little head coaching experience.

The above part was more fact based, but I'll list few coaches who werent NT coaches yet who could be something more in the future - this is just my opinion:
Antti Törmänen - I'm surprised if he isn't men's NT head coach at some point during his career
Olli Jokinen - First season with Jukurit and he's doing above expectations
Mikko Manner - Has been a part of Jukka Jalonen's assistant coach team for a long time now.
Toni Söderholm - He might get fired from German NT soon, cause this Olympic tournament was a very bad one for Germany, but he had some good times with Germany so interesting to see if he can bounce back.
Pekka Virta - his current team Saipa is not so good, maybe due to player material but he's the current Finnish League champion.

This is it.

Current Team Finland is the best KHL-hockey playing hockey team in the World. Not the Eastern neighbour. That warmongering country.

The Gold is coming.

I think that Finland wins also. It will be a hard game but Finland wins in the end.

Pitkäveto on Veikkaus betting site put Finland as favorite btw.

Now that Slovakia got their first Olympic medal, it's time for Finland to win their first gold. Will be cheering for them tomorrow.

Got to remember to put your alarm clock on then. It starts really early.

I wouldn't lean too far out of the window. In addition, politics should not play a role here. I expect a completely open game, which Finland can also lose. The odds are 50:50.

Summanen was abusive and threatened violence multiple times. He made the (female) national team secretary cry. He threw a full coke can at Jutila and barely missed his face. According to Westerlund, Summanen also liked to manipulate players to get into conflict with team mates.

That sounds awful. I never knew that. Thanks for filling me in.

He is the only coach in Finnish hockey history to be sued and found guilty for defamation for insults during a game, kept calling the opponents coach a pedophile.

Super happy for the SVK win today with their first olympic medal. On the other hand, tomorrow's game is a toss up. May the best team win.

Summanen was nuts but it doesn't change the fact that Summanen was a very talented coach on his prime days. If he had stayed for longer as the head coach a lot of chaos would've ensued and a lot of bridges would've been burnt between him and players but I believe that he also would've brought a WHC gold before Jukka Jalonen did it in 2011 with Summanen's questionable methods. He wouldn't have needed all of the best players as some of them would've surely refused to play under him. I just think that he was that good as a coach, but he was very bad at handling people and nuts.

Win after win, medal after medal and still foreign guys don't understand. We have massive, i mean massive edge to every country before any tournament.

We have a structure that gives us chance to win any tournament with pretty much any players. And when we have good team on paper we should be favourites.

But being underdog is fine, then foreigners can be in shock every year "How on earth did this happen". Best vs best i'd say Canada is the only favourite against us.

I don't think that Finland would've won without Mörkö's cold spaghetti that was actually gold spaghetti. That set the team towards their destiny of gold.

Nonono we are the underdogs in Tampere tournament soon :). Let them think so. We like that very much.

Speaking of which, how do we leave any of these players out of the team when we will be loaded with NHL players as well. I know that Mörkö should stay no matter what.

I liked Oskari Saari as the main commentator and Janne Pesonen as the assistant commentator. In my opinion they did goob job. I liked Oskari Saari as F1 commentator as well. I don't know how many here watch F1.

YES! Finally the generational dream is accomplished! This is amazing i don't have the words to describe this feeling, i've been waiting for this moment for decades.

Jukka Jalonen has created unstoppable machine. Every player has a role and they execute their role with perfection, and when that machine gets united like this they become unbeatable. Players becames more like cyborgs than humans.

What a great day to be a finn.

Kiitos Leijonat.
