WC: Team Canada Roster

thankfully I missed that mess yesterday. players' family arrived the day before and their all expense paid little European weekend getaway looks as though it has started.

LOL at adding Turris at this point for a 1/4 final game. one and done. I'm putting my gold medal game aspirations aside for this year and already looking forward to the 2019 roster thread coming in January.

Kyle freaking Turris. That's just too rich.
 
This roster gave me a chuckle at the beginning, and our additions only made it more funny. I never expect much from this tournament, especially from this one in particular, with McDavid being our only player who’d actually make Canada. But I watch it every year anyway because I’m an Oilers fan lol.

I don't mind the roster so much, .. the goal tending is pretty weak though. Adding Turris doesn't make sense. Play Chabot and use him on the PP. He can generate.
 
The roster is not bad outside of the goaltending, and even bad goaltending can often be adequate if the defence in front plays well enough. The issue is that Canada's defence played well against USA and Kuemper gave the game away. Against Finland the goaltending was bad but Canada was outplayed in general and deserved the loss regardless. Looking at the rosters of the other teams and some of the results, no team in this tournament looks elite. Canada has a decent chance. The worst draw for Canada would be Sweden, but even then I would be glad for Canada's young forwards to get a game against the top defence in the tournament, win or lose.

If Turris plays well (much better than he did in the playoffs) then his addition could be beneficial. McDavid and Barzal (who looked off the last two games in my opinion) aren't moving from centre, so it will either be Horvat or Schenn. Horvat has been fine but predictably doesn't look good at centre at even strength. Put Turris as the playmaker, bump Schenn to the wing somewhere in the lineup and the team is quite possibly more dangerous. Stylistically adding a playmaker isn't what this team really needed but it may help. At least there isn't tremendous chemistry that a late addition will throw off. Rishaug said that Turris will join the team "in a few days" and I'm hoping that that means the final round robin game against Germany and not just for the quarterfinal game.

Maybe I'm nitpicking now, but intention is good.

It's Säteri, where letter 'ä' is vowel sound of Finnish language, that shouldn't be confused with use of double upper points above a letter in various other orthographies as a marker of either a separation of two vowels to different syllables or as a marker of double wovel of same syllable. (for example: aa -> ä).

Thus, Säteri should be transliterated to English merely as 'Sateri' (or 'Saeteri') than Saateri.

*a grammar nazi 'copulating commas' now* :laugh:

Add:

sää ('weather' in Finnish)
saa ('get') --> 'you get a puck'
sä ('you' in some Finnish dialects. Short form of formal 'sinä')
saada ('to get')
säätää ('to adjust' / also slang meaning of 'to get something from somewhere'/'make something to happen')
säästää ('to save'/'to spare')
saattaa ('to escort' / 'might/may')
saasta ('decay'/'filth'/'dirt')
...

"Sä saatat saada saattaa säätäjää sädehtivässä säässä" ---> (roughly) "You maybe get a chance to escort a fixer in the shiny weather."

"Sää saattaa säästää saastan säätämiseltä" ---> (roughly) "Weather (good) might save (someone) from handling a filth/dirt" (Proper Finnish in rather obscure scenario where someone says that using slang when there is raining and one should start shovel a muddy soil, and there are no imperative reason to start to do that just now.)

"Saasta saattaa haastaa säästä säästyäkseen" ---> (roughly) [A person of dubious low moral character] may chit-chat about the weather to get spared". (Objective statement from a sheriff about criminal guy where he makes assumption the convict will try evade his eventual execution by using delaying tactics of small talk about weather. Regardless of obscurity of the example, the sentence is written in proper, correct Finnish.)

Difference of letter ä and a is highly meaningful in Finnish language. /OT

I wish Canada would have started Canucks goalie prospect DiPietro at least once in this tourney.

Kuemper and McElhinney are 2 weak goalies. They should of at least brought 1 of the 2 Cams who are actual starters. Ward or Talbot.

How do you even know that they arrived & are we now blaming the poor performance in the game against Finland on their families?
 
Our goaltending must be the worst we ever had

They should have at least asked the young up and comming goaltenders like hart or anyone other youngster. In the end we will not get past the semi

Martin Brodeur and Sean Burke are apart of Canada's management group, as two former goalies you have to think they know goaltending is this teams achilles heel. I know for a fact they aren't happy that Kuemper and McElhinney were the only guys to accept. But there isn't much they can do about it, just hope it all works out like the rest of us.

To be honest I'd still rather be in Canada's position than Finland, the Finns have lost to 2 weak teams now (Denmark, Germany) imagine the outrage that would be going on here if Canada lost to one of those teams. But you already know that the Finns still believe their team can go all the way. I admire their hope, us Canadians should try and show the same belief at least.

Well to be fair, Denmark and Germany really aren't weak at all but yeah, we all know they are not one of the hockey powers.

We need to be better and this roster (goaltender excuse or not) is better then they have been playing.You look all through the lineup and there is plenty of talent, for gods sake we have the best player in the world to start it all off and no shortage of good N.H.L players after him. Time to pick it the f*** up!!

Well I mean in comparison to the established top hockey powers, Finland losing to Denmark/Germany is still considered huge upsets and if Canada lost to those countries there would indeed be outrage on these boards.

I agree entirely, Canada is very capable of playing a lot better. We have the firepower to score our way to gold no doubt. After a 5-1 loss to Finland though and no offence to Latvia but I expect a bloodbath in Canada's next game against them along with another strong win against the Germans to close out the prelims.

As for the QF its likely going to be against the Swedes or Russians. Its a tough match up but we can only hope our offence produces and our goalies can make the saves. One game at a time come playoffs.

We actually only have the firepower to score our way to gold if the boys play defense to a tee, both at even strength and on the p.k.

200 foot game, especially with these goalies.

I don't consider myself well versed on how the team is playing this year yet because so far I have only gotten to see the Finland game due to work but I sure did not like their p.k work in that contest and at too many times i didn't like team defense overall period. I know the goalies stank but they didn't get a strong showing in front of them during the penalties and other times during the game.

Have to wait and see what this team brings going forward.
 
Would love if somebody could post the current line combinations. Haven't been able to catch any of the games and can't find anything online. Much appreciated!!!
Also, how has Jost looked? He is a player I am expecting to really break out next year.

The lines have mostly been

Nugent Hopkins McDavid Schwartz
O'Reilly Schenn Bailey
Beauvillier Barzal Eberle
Dubois Horvat Pageau
Jost

That information is probably obsolete however as Canada started mixing lines significantly in the last game and is expected to continue doing so today. Jost has been fine, scored some goals in limited time and looks like he belongs. He should get more minutes during the game today as Dubois apparently has a minor injury.
