If I'm being honest glad Tanev and Tavares didn't make it. Especially Tanev, the way he plays some rest is better. He deserves it though.
My thoughts exactly. Better to stay healthy and try and win a Cup. No injuries, no wear and tear.

I used to watch Team Canada above all else when I was a kid but the world isn't the same. Canada Cup '87 was the peek for me, the loss to the Czechs in '98 I believe with Hasek in net and Gretzky not taking part in the shootout was a big deal. I stayed up until 2 or 3 in the morning to watch that game.

Other than the Olympics, I'm not too interested. These seems more of a spurious tournament though I'm sure the players are eager to represent their country after such a long lull.

The world is a smaller place now. There isn't an Eastern Bloc anymore. Back then we didn't know any of the Russian players, it was more "us vs them". That environment cannot be replicated today.

This appears to be more of an intense NHL all-star game where they divide the teams by nationality. Of course I will root for Team Canada but I probably won't watch any games unless they make it to the gold medal game if that is how it is structured.

 That graphic is the Marner haters wet dream. Incoming “hes the 13th forward, here’s the proof”.

I believe those were the insiders rumored actual lines. Will probably be injuries and slumps ahead so it's all subject to change. MacKinnon in an interview said he was excited for an all Nova Scotia line and also said McDavid and Marner had insane chemistry at summer training so not really surprising to see those lines.

Maybe because it's one of my first hockey memories, but I still think the 1975 New Year's Eve game between Montreal and the USSR was the greatest hockey game ever played. I also loved the 1979 rematch.

Doesn't help that at least 6 capable hockey nations are missing from this tournament. Why Czechia, Germany, Switzerland, Slovenia, and Slovakia are missing is beyond me. Russia I get but that's still a contending nation missing that makes this tournament feel very Mickey Mouse.

Other than maybe Czechia, none of those other countries could realistically ice a competitive lineup relative to the other countries. The Russia thing is honestly stupid. What do hockey players have to do with a war they aren't in or have no influence over?

Let's hope players do not treat this like an all-star game. Shutting down the league for two weeks to watch shinny games would be a complete waste of time and an embarrassment to the league for me.

Only NHL players are allowed. But bettman said they didn’t have the resources to plan a full tournament in a short amount of time. The next World Cup should feature more teams.

Team canada looks weaker than usual for the first time in forever

Jarvis, Cirelli, Bennett, Koencny really should not be Team Canada level players

Goaltending is the worst probably in Team Canada history

Canada really went heavy on the 2-way forwards up front. part of it is the two way mentality they have adopted after the 2006 debacle but also to compensate for goaltending worries IMO.

Ranking the forwards on the team by points/game since the start of the 2022-23 season:

1. McDavid: 1.756
2. MacKinnon: 1.620
3. Marner: 1.264
4. Point: 1.132
5. Crosby: 1.115
6. Reinhart: 1.026
7. Stone: 1.000
8. Konecny:: 0.988
9. Hagel: 0.903
10. Marchand: 0.842
11. Jarvis: 0.674
12. Bennet: 0.669
13. Cirelli: 0.606

Ranking the forwards on the team by 5v5 goal differential since the start of the 2022-23 season::

1. Marner: 61.42%
2. Marchand: 60.92%
3. MacKinnon: 60.09%
4. Stone: 58.42%
5. Jarvis: 57.98%
6. Bennet: 57.78%
7. McDavid: 57.35%
8. Reinhart: 57.04%
9. Cirelli: 53.93%
10. Hagel: 53.74%
11. Crosby: 53.09%
12. Point: 52.04%
13. Konecny: 48.34%

Ranking the forwards on the team by points/game over the last 3 playoffs:

1. McDavid: 1.792
2. Crosby: 1.667 (but hasnt been there the last 2 playoffs)
3. Marchand: 1.240
4. MacKinnon: 1.184
5. Marner: 1.000
6. Stone: 0.931
7. Point: 0.700
8. Jarvis: 0.675
9. Bennett: 0.653
10. Reinhart: 0.600
11. Cirelli: 0.471
12. Hagel: 0.471
13. Konecny: N/A (hasnt been in the playoffs the last 3 years)

Ranking the forwards on the team by 5v5 goal differential over the last 3 playoffs:

1. Jarvis: 66.42%
2. Marner: 64.20%
3. McDavid: 63.50%
4. MacKinnon: 61.93%
5. Crosby: 58.91% (but hasnt been there the last 2 playoffs)
6. Marchand: 55.47%
7. Point: 51.91%
8. Bennet: 51.37%
9. Reinhart: 51.96%
10. Stone: 49.65%
11. Hagel: 49.07%
12. Cirelli: 41.37%
13. Konecny: N/A (hasnt been in the playoffs the last 3 years)

Goal differential can certainly be affected by goaltending in your own net but considering almost all these guys face up against the highest of QoC, very good numbers overall. Outside of a couple of ouliers (McDavid, Crosby, Marchand), scoring falls off pretty hard in the playoffs but it does that generally.

Really hard to play against team overall and the lack of size up front worries against the US is probabably countered by the fact the US has a smallish dcore and the Canadians went bigger on the backend with Sanheim/Parayko.

That is some dandy trolling they did there formatting it like it's reading line combinations and putting Mitch as the 13th forward.
And McDavid on the wing!

Relax people - it's just alphabetical.

Considering that it's an NHL tournament, I'm not surprised. (Is there anyone on the four teams who isn't an NHL player?) How many players from each of those other countries have played at least one game in the NHL this year?

Czechia 20
Germany 5
Switzerland 8
Slovenia 1
Slovakia 7

Compared to:
Russia 46
Finland 46
Sweden 69
USA 228
Canada 323

Those other five countries combined have only 41 'eligible' players.

(Numbers are for skaters only.)

I don’t think it does. You’re the one tagging me in a post where you can’t contain your excitement over Marner potentially making the team.

What’s more telling is that he was the 2nd highest-paid Canadian player under 30 years old a couple of years ago and is currently the 3rd highest-paid. Yet, you’re excited he might crack a 13-forward list, obviously alongside 10 players paid less than him. Most who will have made significantly less than him over the life of their contracts.

That’s a low standard. If he’d been worth his contract since 2019, he would’ve made the initial list with ease.

If anything his status with the Team Canada roster is beneficial to my argument regarding Marner and not yours.

Why did you double post the 1st and 2nd paragraph... a glitch in your programming?

Yeah to see players like Draisaitl not playing feels like an omission on the NHL's part. If the NHL didn't want the tournament to get too bloated with too many games, they could have had an ALL World team that would have the best from the rest of the world
