It would be interesting to look at the roster choices in the past. The "role" players always get mentioned when Canada has lost like in '98 and 2006.
That's because in 2010, the only role player we took was Morrow. In 2014, it was Kunitz.

Everyone else was a 1st-line star on their teams.

They're playing on NHL ice in Italy
If so I still think reconsider those two. I do think guys like Harley, Bingington, Bennett get in just for how they how they performed this tournament. Harley mostly as a thank you for coming in on notice. Also the Wilson pick for next year isn’t a good pick. His antics might have been needed for this tourney but just won’t fly for international rule events.

For me right now: NHL Officials (they were gréât btw all tournament compared to the IIHF refs) and small ice

(Parayko, Doughty, Dunn, Montour, Bryam, Power, Dobson, Bouchard)

Thompson
Binnington
Hill

Sincere question....

Do you really think Celebrini is ready?

Gotta think Hyman makes the team because it helps you get the most out of McDavid. Wonder if they bring Tom Wilson because of the Tkachuks. And do they integrate more youth into the team?

Probably the single stupidest decision in the history of international hockey. They went with Kris Draper and his whopping 32 points over 102 point-Crosby, one of the greatest players in the history of the game. Absolutely braindead.
It was because Draper had a good World Cup in 2004 and they always favor players like that. Crosby wasn’t there because he “too young” even though if any 18 year old should have made it, it should have been Sid. That 2006 team was just a disaster though. Too many political picks and grit picks on an event that would have favoured skilled. Sadly these tourney proved it was time for Gretzky to move on as he got caught up in those habits listed as they just went blown with them. They wanted Yzerman on the team still even though he was on his last legs and Yzerman basically had to pull himself out.

He’s the most complete player I’ve seen enter the league since Matthews and the most dynamic skater since McDavid. Who knows if he goes on to achieve what Crosby has, but he’s in that mould.

Granted this^^^ was one of his better games, but those highlights are all from one game, his impact as an 18 year old is insane. He would have been ready to play in this tournament if they needed him.

Kent Johnson?
I'm not saying he's undeserving in a vacuum, but if you're going to pass over a vet for a young kid, would you take Johnson over Bedard or Celebrini?

Not looking good for people who want to leave Marner off the team. He's the third highest scoring player in the NHL from Canada behind McDavid and MacKinnon. It's not happening.

Setup like 4 different plays, two of them went in to tie and win the game.
No chance in hell he would be left off the team,
Finals performance or not

Im cognisant that he probably won’t make it, but it’s the team I would bring, not a projection. His skill, vision, and agility are crazy good at unlocking tight games and he would be the equivalent of Duchene on those 14/16 teams for me

And to answer your question, Celebrini is there for me; Bedard I just don’t think he would be able to play at this pace of game yet, or he would have to be extremely sheltered to do so

IIHF officiating will render the Tkachuks ineffective, and that's not me being a hater. Loved their style of play this week for the most part. Every shot after the whistle or big hit seems like it gets called in those tourneys.

I had them off the team but Binnington and Bennet both probably win a spot in 2026 with their performance in the final game.

Marchand Parayko Doughty are probably past their best by date and likely age out. Not sure if Stone or Cirelli are invited after very lack luster tourneys either. Might make the team as a 4th liners though as the PK will play a bigger factor in 2026.

Locks:
Mcdavid, MacKinnon, Makar, Crosby, Point, binnington

Near locks:
Toews, Marner, Parayko, Reinhart, Hagel, Cirelli

I think Celebrini and Bedard will be interesting to see. If they are good enough for this team that would be very ideal. USA has made up so much ground recently because their high end talents have turned out vs Canada’s haven’t. Could really use the elite skill of Bédard and Celebrini if they’re ready in a year.

Stone

1 of Wilson/Hyman are in.
1 or both of Cirelli/Hagel.
Rest is a combination of Konecny, Barzal, Kyrou, Thomas, Johnston, Scheifele, Suzuki, Horvat, Celebrini, Bedard, Batherson, Jarvis, Vilardi.

Personally think Vilardi would play very well with McDavid.

Defense:

Toews-Makar
Theodore-Pietrangelo
Morrisey-Harley(LH)
Sanheim, Parayko, Dobson/Hamilton/Bouchard

Goalie:

Binnington
Blackwood/Thompson/Hill

Bedard will make the team. Canada made the same mistake and didn't take Sid in 06 and lost bad when Ovechkin was dominating at the same age in Turin.

I hope so.

They need to have a smooth transition for 2028 and 2030 as well. If Bedard comes out flying next season, he will definitely make the team since they need his shot on the team.

Are we expecting Doughty to retire? Was one of Canada’s best defensmen. Should at least be in contention

Don't forget Kent Johnson on the left and Dylan Guenther on the right.
