The NHL said Team Europe and Team N/A were only a one time thing because they didn't have time to do qualifiers.

Whether the popularity of Team N/A changed that or not, I'm not sure

Assuming Team N/A isnt included, I dont see how 34 year old Bergeron beats out 23 year old Mitch Marner. I could also see Burns having trouble making the team at 35, but he could be the same player he is today.

Marner will be there with or without Bergeron.

I have Burns playing F by then. But if his legs are still good he could still be on D.

Will be interesting to see. I would prefer Drouin or MacKinnon over Burns at forward. The D seems to be somewhat set with a few locks, but forwards should be more interesting to watch play out.

I originally had Drouin there, but changed it to Burns because he could still be a force up front and added some more size

I could honestly see Burns playing either F or D, but I could very well see Colton Parayko at least challenging for a D spot. Even Ekblad if he rebounds by then.

Point who had a 38 goal 63 point pace post-injury?

And? ROR is one of the best two-way forwards in the league, can play any forward position, in any situation, AND has an amazing beard. Point is a nice player. But he's very unlikely to ever make Team Canada in a best-on-best tournament.

We'll see ;)

Keyword is pace. The guy went hot for 31 games(25points) doesn't make him a superstar. Wait to see how he does next year first.

I mean, 40 points in 68 games as a rookie when for the first half of the season he was hella snakebitten and played down in the lineup :dunno:

Such a stupid, stupid idea...

Knowing Team Canada’s love of two-way guys, especially when it comes to depth roles…

Benn-Crosby-Seguin
Tavares-Scheifele-Stamkos
Marchand-Bergeron-Johansson
Hall-ROR-Stone

Scheifele and Hall get the nods considering they’ve gone whenever TC has called on them for the WHC. Duchene, MacKinnen, RNH, Getzlaf, Turris, Monahan, Drouin are the rest knocking at the door. Needless to say forward depth isn’t the issue, even without the young guys. It’s the same on defence.

Vlasic-Doughty
Brodie-Pietranglo
Keith-Burns

Giordano, Subban, Letang round out guys who are at that calibre currently.

Price
Holtby
Talbot/Crowford/Dubnyk/Jones

Just another way Betman sticks it to Canada.

I hate that guy.

If the guy from Mad magazine and Peewee Herman had a baby, they would name him Gary.

If I'm not mistaken, as someone already pointed out to you in this thread, the likes of Matthews/Eichel would still be team NA, hence why the states wants the ruling changed there.

If I'm not mistaken, as someone already pointed out in this thread, Team NA was a one time thing. As far as anyone knows they won't be there if there is a tournament in 2020. Bettman and Co have only been quoted as saying Teams NA and Europe were one time teams.

Those were generally quotes from before the tournament. During and after the tournament Bettman spoke much less definitively about whether that team would return and more about the positives he thought that the team brought. Considering that the excuse the NHL gave for the gimmick teams (not enough time for qualifiers... which weren't necessary in the first place) was nonsense it remains to be seen if the team returns. A world cup tournament without the gimmick teams would probably be good.

I think if there is a world cup in 2020 there will have to be a bit of a changing of the guard from the core of our teams that is that 2005 group, 15 years is about the maximum time allowed for a cut off from any group and this one should be no different. We don't want to get caught with our pants down keeping some guys on too long.

Perry is already out IMO, Getzlaf will be questionable, Bergeron too. on defense I can see Keith being long gone but you never know as he could still be that Neidermayer in 2010 kind of guy.

Some tough calls will have to be made but unquestionably some youth is going to have to be served. It reminds me a bit of 1995 in that we have some vets we have to make scary decisions on while you have a U.S team with a new wave of talent that will be entering it's prime mostly all at the same time.

Gonna be interesting.

Teams skated circles around our defence in 2006, it was way too old and past expiry date, hopefully some new guys step up the next couple years.

I see Canada going with some new comers

Ekblad , paryeko , Mathewson (maybe chycrun)
Mackinon, mcdavid, sequin, benn, johansson

Who knows where marner and other young Canadian stars will be for 2020 we might need a few more years after 2020 for the new Canadian stars to shine.

Out with the old in with the new

A lot will depend on whether or not the NHL chooses to ruin the event's credibility as they did last year.

In 2020 Canada stands to have its roster pillaged as Team USA was in 2016.
