While this obviously comes with a non-impartial view I want to vouch for Colby Barlow at this pick, and he works for a number of reasons.

First, he's arguably the 3rd best goal scorer in the draft class, and if you think Perrault is a better goal scorer, then there's not much argument he's lower than 4th. His draft year goal scoring pace this year put him in the realm of Jeff Skinner and Alex DeBrincat in terms of productivity in the last 20 years of OHL hockey.

Second, he's got the all around game to play at the next level in a variety of roles. In addition to his goal scoring, he's got the hustle and defensive acumen to kill penalties (although we'll see at the NHL level), and play well in his own end. Of the players in this range, he's got a very low bust chance and at worst is likely someone who is an NHL regular for a long time.

Third, he possibly best fits the timeline for one last shot at reinforcement for the Crosby/Malkin/Letang era. This part may age like milk if there are drastic changes this summer, but Barlow is possibly NHL ready September 2024, or at least is going to be pushing to make the roster. He could be the kind of cheap, talented young player that helps the team's depth in a 3rd line (or more) role at 19. He really only needs one more year of junior.

Sale is my darkhorse candidate since I've seen a lot of him, certainly more than this site. I don't really care about many of the others, though I wish we could snag Dvorský

Not sure I would pick him (although he'd be in the conversation) but a bit weird to not see Axel Sandin Pellikka as an option at this point.

Regardless, barring some stupid decision, we should be able to get a really good prospect with this pick. It would be really nice to still have our 2nd, too.

I haven't been following this draft too closely, but Barlow is a player I could really get excited for. Much more than Yager.

getting a center that enables them to move to wing could extend that window farther.

You sold me. Young goal scorers can come in early and score sometimes.

And Debrincat and Skinner both churn out goals.

I don't know a f***ing thing about anybody after like 5, so I'll just defer to PensFan101 cuz it seems like they know what they're talking about, and seeming like you know what you're talking about is all it takes.

I wish we had multiple 1st rounders here in the top 20, similar to Boston years ago when they had 3 in a row

Anyone from Perreault, Yager, Wood, Barlow, Ritchie, Sale is good with me

I still think this team could've snagged another 1st and a 2nd, maybe two 1sts, if they retained 50% on Zucker and Dumo and dumped 'em at the deadline. GMs at the deadline are f***ing braindead,

Shame this team employed one of those kinda GMs.

If you think Yager can be ready in 18 months, and you value him the same as Barlow, then sure you take him because Yager's a centre. I don't think you can go wrong here, the Pens will do really well to have a number of talented players at 14 that aren't available most years. Just wanted to provide my (biased) take on a player I've watched a lot and would make a lot of sense with the pick.

BPA here is Wood to me. I won’t dissect his skillset, he just appears to have “it.”

PPG as the youngest player in D1, outstanding, near-dominant U18s. 6’3”.

i like wood, but yager has more up side and is a right handed center all things that put him over wood. imo
