Which first overall pick's prime was better?

They have fairly similar career arcs: They each had some good seasons before peaking late and then falling off.

Brian Lawton when he was gm of Tampa, had an offer of Price, subban, patioretty and a 1st rd pick for Lecavalier. But one of the owners nixed it. Bob gained was the Montreal gm, and a horrid one at that.

Hall is such a weird case. Had an excellent career, even won a hart, but still felt like a disappointing 1st OA

Hall that one year with the Devils was better than anything Lecavalier ever did in a season

However, Lecavalier had the better career.

Have to disagree there. I recognize that Hall won a Hart, and I’ve long argued that it was deserving, but Lecavalier was simply better in 2006-2007.

Sure, he didn’t win the Hart, but he did lead the league in goals, he was third in points, and was fourth in PPG. True, he finished 4th in Hart voting, but he was second among forwards to only Crosby’s terrific sophomore campaign and two truly insane seasons by Luongo and Brodeur. It’s not like he didn’t have his own electric second half to lead the Lightning into the playoffs. He scored 31 goals and 55 points in 41 second half games while the Lightning went 25-13-3 after starting 19-20-2.

Meanwhile, Hall finished sixth in goals, seventh in points, and seventh in PPG. Other than his own terrific play down the stretch, his case was also helped tremendously by external factors going in his favor, like McDavid and the Oilers missing the playoffs, people not catching up to Kucherov just yet, no goalies showing up in the top 10 in voting, MacKinnon shooting himself in the foot, and no one really having an ironclad case overall. Transplant the equivalent of his season into 2006-2007 and he’s a mere footnote.

Lecavalier does carry a slight stench of being a disappointment for a #1 pick, but I was younger and let hype rule me. He still had a pretty good career, as you said, better than Hall’s. He also peaked at a level higher than Hall for an individual season, and grouping of seasons.

And the Devils punted him to the Coyotes mid way through the next season. That says a lot, IMO.

These two are a very interesting comparison. First overall picks who accomplished a good amount in the league but are still generally seen as disappointments. Both weren't ideal leaders, not known for their two way play(lol), Hall seems to have the character flaw cloud above him more than Vinny, tho.

It's Lecavalier.

Uh... Brooklyn!
it's Vinny, and if you really wanna talk about game, put Vinny at Cowboys in Calgary, versus Taylor at the old Iron Horse in Edmonton, ainec

It comes with Taylor Hall's character. He didn't score a goal late into that season and then cupped his hands towards his home own fans which was just a cringe move. Then didn't want to resign with the team that was offering him a great deal. Turned out to work against him in the long run.

Lecavier was a warhorse in his prime. He was overplayed and then after they won the cup, he was overplayed even more.

Yeah, I do wonder if that's one of the reasons he didn't age that well. I know there was the injury from the Cooke hit, but TB used to play the guy like 24 minutes a game at his peak. Maybe that caused him to wear down.

Brad Richards logged a ton of minutes for those post Lockout Tampa teams as well.
