Confirmed with Link: Taylor Hall extension signed - 3 years $9.5m

Honestly, #1 was my guess.
I'm not sure how much that is a solid fact, but I've heard that claimed not rarely, and I want to believe. But, I am in understanding that some signings would have been announced during the supposed moratorium in the past, so who knows.

If I were GMing I'd look more to spend my money by taking on a contract from a team who needs space. Tyler Seguin, for example. Of the UFAs, I see Marner as being a top line option but all 32 teams will try for him so you don't ever count on that happening until it does.

I'd rather develop Morrow than get a Bouchard. Dobson would be great, but the acquisition cost would be a lot.

The bummer part of me thinks that since so many teams will have capspace, the fact that our team has it as well won't be as valuable as it was in the flat cap era. Perhaps it will be drastically less valuable. If we can't find how to spend our $$, I'd bet a lot of teams will have the same problem.

Fortunately we don't need to go out and buy a lot of middle 6 players in free agency. By signing Hall, we just need 1 forward, and worst case scenario that could be Nadeau. I think a lot of these middle 6 guys will get significantly more than Hall got.

I mean, with all the signings we need to make in 2026, it’d be reasonable to do a Marleau-esque trade as an “all else fails” strategy.

Good deal. He gets the term and stability he wanted. We get a good AAV for a mid 6 winger.

Good problem to have with full roster and cap space to add more..

Bouchard was painfully bad defensively the first few games of the LA series. He would get trashed way worse than Burns on here with his playoff performance to date. But wow can he bomb the puck on the PP..

Is he bad defensively because he is just bad, or is he bad because the way Edmonton plays defense is bad for him? I often wonder about how different our man on man vs what most other teams do affects the valuation of certain players. I think our man on man actually helped TDA's game here the first time and led to him getting a contract with the Flyers when he left. Maybe some guys work better here than other locations?

glad to have hall back, and that is a heck of a good looking deal.

on bouchard - and i haven't watch him a ton, admittedly - is there any reason for any team to sign him instead of getting tda for lower cost? is his offense that much better than tda's? defensively, i might give the edge to tda, honestly. again, on limited viewing.

valid question. I ended up eating a ton of crow on the Skjei acquisition when he fit in pretty nicely here after being something of a tire fire in New York. Of course, now in Nashville he's back to under-performing, so a good part of that could have simply been the Brett Pesce effect as well.

Either way this gives us a ton of flexibility to do something interesting this offseason. Of course to me the funniest possible outcome for that would be sending Dallas one of their picks back for Robertson considering their cap situation.

I'd mostly trust our pro scouts on the fit of a guy like Bouchard if they acquired him. They are especially pretty good with fits on the defense. I'd assume they would have a good read on if his skating and stick play might translate to what our team does best. And also if his offense would translate away from the Edmonton track meet. I would expect if they did get someone like him, it might look a lot like Skjei at first, but could develop from there.

One of their picks? Yes please.

Never seen points be included in a no trade clause that must be a first ever in the nhl

Just to add to this...Ghost was also considered to be terrible defensively in Philly and improved slightly since being here twice

It does open up an interesting hypothetical scenario though. Say Hall is sitting at 32 points with 5 games remaining in Year 2. Canes are in a similar situation as they were this year, where the spot is locked up and the last few games mean nothing.

Do you healthy scratch Hall for those remaining games to prevent him from reaching 35 and opening up the modified NTC in year 3?

3 years @ $3.1M? Hell yea, low risk, high reward! Sure he's had some rough games, and consistency issues...but who on this team hasn't? Dude can skate, seems to fit in well, has some good playmaking ability, and can pretty easily move around the lineup as needed. Honestly I was worried it'd be like 4 yrs @ $4M+...this is long-term 3rd line money for a guy who could provide excellent bang for your buck for a year or two. The NTC/NMC based on points is definitely not something i've seen before, or even knew was possible. By the time he's fading out, some of these guys like FUS, Nadeau, Arty will be stepping up so he can be a 4th line vet or something. Glad he seems to like it here, as it seems like he took a bit of discount on year and term to have some stability for his last few years

Martinook and Hall's contracts match perfectly with Artamonov's projected path to the NHL. He's their spiritual successor, potentially with more point production.

Love that points clause. That's some "Getting to Yes" book win-win negotiation shit.

No. Doing deals like this (and what was undoubtedly a "hand-shake" agreement as part of the KK offer sheet thing) requires trust. You don't hurt the ability to do stuff like this down the road by acting in an unprincipled fashion.

Hall would be much better if he tried to do less with the puck IMO. I think this is just an OK deal and could be moved if needed, but will probably be rough in that final year when he is older/slower.

Hall is basically a .5pt/g forward now who barely breaks even in 5v5 goal differential, and is unavailable for 1/3rd of a season's games. I don't think his trajectory from here is anything but down as he continues to lose some speed and those tough miles add up on his body. He would be great if he could learn to play better D, stop making painful turnovers forcing it, and evolve his game to match his current capabilities.

I have to keep reminding myself that this isn't the same 1OA "Taylor Hall" he used to be with blistering speed.
