Speculation: Taylor Hall Contract

I know it's early, but realistically he could sign anywhere between now and and July if he chooses to do so. I figured this would be a good place to discuss the prospect of re-signing him, what it might take, and any news relating to it.

I know many of us aren't very confident he'll stay, but I find comfort in the fact that Alex Meruelo and John Chayka take a lot of pride in bringing him here in the first place, so Meruelo might do what it takes to make him an offer he can't refuse. Also, Renaud Lavoie was just recently on the Tim and Sid show in Canada and he believes that Taylor Hall could be persuaded by the Coyotes if shown a competitive team, because he believes that chances are he's going to love the location.

That being said, it's going to take a lot of work. Taylor Hall is a former League MVP that will probably command above 9 million a year at least, and he's never had say in where he plays. He's going to get a lot of offers.

I think that you guys have a VERY underrated shot at getting him. He is *likely* going to get his first taste at real success here. Our gentleman's sweep vs TB wasn't a real playoff hockey experience. Plus, Arizona is a sweet place to spend half your year.

It's similar to the Kovalchuk to NJ situation. The Devs would never have had a shot at signing him if they didn't trade for him and he started taking a liking to how things were being run.

It'll probably be $80ish (+/- $5mill) over 8 years if I had to take a guess.

I think you understate just how hard it us to make a Cap and a team work. It's not simply plug and play with the easy ability to move those that don't fit. Or are the rest of the teams just dumb when they face these situations?

I think we're keeping Demers. He's been brought up by multiple young players as a guy who keeps the room loose, and he's our only natural RD right now (excepting callups like Gross and Russo).

I'd kind of do it like the Dbacks just did with MadBum. Say we're not going to give him the highest offer (100M for Madbum) but give him a respectable deal that he can take if he likes the situation here. I think 8.5-9M would be that. Moving Stepan's contract probably needs to be done though if we expect to do this.

Too early to tell anything. Is he still an elite player, does he stay healthy, does the team make the playoffs, win a round or two maybe or none at all, does he like Scottsdale? This is a test drive for Hall and the Coyotes, do they want each other? The brochure looks good, but we shall see how it all plays out.

I don't recall suggesting anyone did? But they did have to take pennies on the dollar for good players as every one knew their Cap situation, the Hawks have done it several times. If the Coyote's sign Hall to $9 million next summer I have serious doubts that the team will be better next season. A few vets will be departing for rookies and that rarely makes a better team. The backup will be a big if compared to now. Of course just dumping Kessel could fix all of that??

Stepan and Kessel can rest assured they won't be traded. Any RT fav's are here for a long time. Garland will be the next to be traded.

I'm not sure what you mean by pennies on the dollar. Hawks have very fair deals or overpaid Toews, Keith, and Seabrook. Teams move out other players to sign their stars. Look at all the juggling Toronto did to fit in Marner this year.

For us it will be much easier, we have several players making more than their worth. And a backup goalie being paid like a starter. Our debate isn't how, it's who. Good position to be in.

Chayka's next challenge is making sure every contract on the team is fair or team friendly. Anyone who is overpaid will be replaced with a good deal. Polar opposite of when he took over and would seek bad deals to bring in extra value.

Stepan and Kessel can rest assured they won't be traded. Any RT fav's are here for a long time. Garland will be the next to be traded.

IMO, I think it will depend on two things for that to happen :

1.) The Coyotes make the playoffs.

2.) They win at least one playoff round when they get there


Hall wants to be in the Playoffs at this point of his career.

Winning a playoff round will show him that this team is Playoff-Ready year-in and year-out.

That will go a long way toward getting a more than great chance of re-signing him.
