Tavares-better player, Kadri-better value (contract). I'd probably still opt for the better player and figure out the cap situation somehow.

For one year it’s Kadri.

How time flies, Tavares only has two more yrs after this. They should make the playoffs this year and next and then they’ll be headed into the start of the tank years.

We had Kadri at 4.5, it was a better deal than Tavares at 11.
We should have just kept Kadri and enjoyed what we had, and saved the $11m and used it on depth peices. Kadri was a 30/30 guy as our 2nd line centre. At this point what's done is done. Signing Kadri for 7 years at his age makes no sense, so I would rather have Tavares for 3 more years than Kadri at 7 more years.

I wouldn't be too pleased with the idea of starting a 7 year Kadri contract this moment, but Kadri's recent body of work clearly outshines Tavares.

No interest in the length of the Kadri deal. I'd prefer to pay Tavares for 3 more years and be done with the old vet cap hit.

Little known fact
These 2 are basically the same age.

Kadri initially at 4.5 million would have given Leafs about at least 6.5 million in cap space. May be more if Matthews/Marner didn't have Tavares contract to point to

Kadri now at 7 million would have given Leafs at least 4 million more in cap space; may be more based on above point of matthews/marner

Long story short.... Even with Tavares Leafs record still stands at 1st round exit while Kadri not only has won the cup but was one of their most important contributing member in the playoffs playing 2C

Answer is easy! :)

Edited as I mixed up the UFA years
JT bc his 11 mil will be off the books when McD hits UFA. I think thats something the McD is looking at too.
Imagine the summer JT hits UFA, JT signs for 1mil and the following summer, McD signs with the Leafs.

Kadri plays like he gives a shit, JT is an emotionless robot who skates like the fat kid in bantam. Easy call here

I don’t get this, JT I think is arguably one of the hardest working on the ice. He’s always in on the forecheck trying to make things happen in front of the net. He’s not just coasting around

We should have just kept Kadri and enjoyed what we had, and saved the $11m and used it on depth peices. Kadri was a 30/30 guy as our 2nd line centre. At this point what's done is done. We literally could have kept both. If we could have Kerfoot at 3.5 and Tavares we could have kept Kadri at his cap hit and had Tavares. It really didn’t have to be one or the other. Kadri got traded because of the suspensions and they just felt he wasn’t maturing.

Never should've traded away a player for having too much passion. Kerfoot was every bit the playoff goat last playoffs blind-backpassing and high sticking the Leafs into a loss in Game 6.
