Value of: tavares next contract ?

I've said this for a while now... If the Leafs let go Tavares, they are going to miss him big time! Their fan base has been way to hard on him while the coach uses him in all situations that frees up Matthews offensively.

I feel Tavares will leave some money on the Table (again) to stay. He's already earned $113M in his career so far. Both Marner and Tavares are staying. Book it
With no Stanley Cups by the time he retires. Book that, too!

No idea if the Leafs can figure it out or not. I will say they have a better overall roster this season than ever before. Their stars are more mature and they got way better depth than before. Gritty guys on D will get them farther. Rielly is a bit of a problem though... underperforming to that contract. If anybody is moved out, it's Rielly... but yeah, another guy who got that NMC.

I'm a Tavares fan and this is coming from a Habs fan who is a straight shooter. Leafs need Tavares and without him, they take a setback IMO

sounds like jt stayin with leafs . so im switching plans to signing depth dmen that wont get big coin such as provorov n ceci as theres no way i want to piss off my core of larks/seider/raymond/dcat by paying giant coin to the marns n rants big guns . ide just wait to 7/1/26 for other past prime vet stars to pop up on radar while saving my cap space for self drafted monsters like edvinsson / asp / cossa / etc as i want to give my own draftees incentive to be loyal to organization . take a risk signing them to big contracts when young so that theyre happy set for life , and the team might end up with a great discount

Tanev is one. McCabe is another

Let's analyze!

Your initial suggestion:

I think 6 years, 3.5AAV will be his next deal.

When I contested, you replied:

They did it with other players who are older

And when I asked for examples, you provided Tanev and McCabe.

For clarification, Tanev was about 3 months younger than Tavares will be when his contract comes up. Tanev signed 6 years, $4.5M/year. This inflates to $4.9M/year under next season's cap.

McCabe is about four years younger than Tavares will be when his contract comes up. McCabe signed 5 years, $4.7M/year. This inflates to $5.1M/year under next season's cap.

So not only were neither of your examples older as you claimed, but they both signed for $1M+/year more than the $3.5M/year you suggested for Tavares, under a lower salary cap.

And neither McCabe nor Tanev is as good as John Tavares.

Try again.

I don't really have the energy to engage in these anymore with people who are just rooting for the Leafs to do the worst thing possible. So I am good, I gave my opinion. Have a good one

Yeah, this isn't really rooting for the Leafs to do the worst thing possible. This is calling your prediction of 6 x $3.5M for a PPG player batshit insane. Tavares could sign a perfectly reasonable contract with the Leafs. What you suggested is not perfectly reasonable.

The rest of your post is just a roundabout way of saying you can't defend it anymore.

My guess is 15 million/3 years.

Hes comfortable in Toronto and wants to win the cup there. He's made 100 million in his career pre tax. He doesn't need the money and is also set for a lucrative retirement gig with the Leafs.

Neither Tanev nor McCabe have made the kind of money Tavares has over their careers. He doesn't need to cash in, hes got plenty of money.

"Do it out of the goodness of your heart, you've made enough money" is an interesting way to sell a guy on 6 x $3.5M.

I appreciate that you were more reasonable with 3 x $5M, but realistically, Tavares is looking at Pavelski's 2019 deal. If there's a home town discount, it'll be him throwing the cap inflation out the window.

I agree with you. I do think the deal will be similarly structured in terms of being longer to bring down the cap hit. I also expect there to be deferred money, also lowering the cap hit. These things may create a bit of illusion towards being a so called discount, but if JT was really wanting to give a significant discount, why haven’t the Leafs signed him yet? If he’s signing for a discount I don’t think Leafs need to see his playoff performance first.
