Speculation: Tavares landing spot?

So again, you Isles fans should be happy.

Tavares did something good for you (did nothing for the Leafs)
You guys went further without him than with him
He failed abysmally afterwards

If I had a time machine and could stop this from happening from the TO perspective, it's not even a thought, he's an Islander for life.

No, because we should’ve gotten two or three blue chip futures for him instead of nothing.

Obviously we’re glad we didn’t sign him, that much is clear.

No need to go anywhere? Maybe he wants to win a Stanley Cup?
Pretty sure he only wants to win it in Toronto and as such, will take whatever he is offered. We will see. I think he is satisfied where he is. I don’t see him willing to make any big moves even if it is for a better chance at a cup (Although I think Toronto is closer than others do, perhaps).

The most sensible and obvious move for everyone involved would be him signing with the Sabres: Stays in the area, fills a desperate need, much more reasonable expectations, his uncle is a living sports legend in the city.

If Detroit didn't have Kasper already grabbing the 2C role from Copp and Compher, I'd say he'd be a good add a $7M x 3.

But realistically, he can get more on the open market, and Detroit is already spending almost $11M on two guys that are being pushed out of their spots by a kid.

Ideally, if you could get rid of one of those contracts, Larkin/Tavares/Kasper would be a nice Top 9 down the middle.

Marner 13 million

Tavares 6 million + Bennet 8 million

I know what I am doing if I am Toronto.
This is brilliant, with the commitments already on the books and your proposed signings the Leafs will have spent roughly $95m of next years $95.5m cap…. Problem is you only have 10 forwards and Knies hasn’t yet signed which means he would now be a very easy and popular offer sheet candidate. 😂

And how far is the drive from Detroit to his home in TO?

If I were running the Habs, I would offer him a 2 year deal at 8.5, or a 3 year deal at 6 that's more front/bonus loaded.

I think you've got too broad a gap between the 2 and 3 year deal.

I actually think your $8.5M number is pretty solid, but for three years. Tavares is very comparable to 2019 Pavelski. That contract would inflate to $8.4M in 25-26 salary cap.

I see him staying. Probably sign for 6-7. I personally wouldn’t do more than 5-6
I think he stays as well but I don't see the 6 or 7 years.

JT has the money and will understand why the Leafs don't go 6 or 7 as that's not a good business decision for them.

As previously mentioned, probably the best comparison is Giroux who signed in Ottawa for 3 years at $6.5m per season.

Tavares also 34,,coming off a better season than Giroux was when he signed and the cap going up could probably do a little better. I would say on the open market could get 3 or 4 years at $8/8.5 per. A discount for Toronto is probably 3 x $7/7.5 per.

All the media today keeps saying 2-3 years at 4.5-5m AAV if he wants to stay with the Leafs and help them. Otherwise thank him for his services and say goodbye gracefully.

I agree.

There is likely no one available to match or beat his likely production for next 2 years who will take less than $7.5 per. 3 years at 6 would be fair to both sides.
