Speculation: Tavares landing spot?

I don't think the Leafs will bring him back if the blow it vs Florida. Think he signs somewhere in relative proximity, so Ottawa, Montreal, Buffalo, Rangers, Detroit etc.

I can see Yzerman signing him in particular.

If Tavares wants to sign for 4m per, would love to bring him back.

11m to Tavares, 11m to flippy back pass Mitch has been a disaster.

This is where I’m at, too

Something based around $20m total contract value. Like $4m x5 or $5m x4

If he wants a NMC knock a year off the contract or knock $1m off the AAV

Somebody will offer him 8mil x 4, same as Stamkos got. Don't think it will be Toronto. He may decide to take less to stay with Toronto, though. But I don't think Toronto is offering him the Stamkos deal. He comes back to Toronto at a discount, or he chases the biggest bag. Up to him.

The difference is that Stamkos had already won his cups, Tavares has not.

Tavares should be prioritizing winning a cup at this point in his career. Stamkos was prioritizing money and it ended with him signing for one of the worst teams in the league.

If Tavares did this, I would be pretty surprised.

Tavares signing for less in Toronto simply aligns with what all of his goals going into the twilight of his career should be.

Reports from some Leafs reporters near the end of the season had them discussing a deal, think $6.5-7M over a couple years was rumoured. I’d prefer to Tanev it up and go longer to knock down the AAV a bit, but pretty clear both sides want to make it work. Only reason it hasn’t already been signed is Tavares understanding Leafs have bigger issues to sort first like Knies and seeing what else they can do on July 1st like a Bennett move.

He really, really does not want to uproot his life at this point and the team won’t be insulting in their offer, a standard hometown discount.

Unless Tavares gives Toronto a hometown discount(Which is possible) He will be headed to free agency. Here is my take on teams that could be a landing spot for him.

Taveras is settled with him family in Mississauga and Muskoka in the summers so I am going to guess three places that make sense IF he wants to stay close to home and Toronto doesn't resign him.

Buffalo, Montreal and Ottawa. I don't think Buffalo will target Tavares but I do see it as a good fit if Tavares wants to stays close to home. The other spots are Ottawa and Montreal. Ottawa also fits that scenario. Montreal could also fit into that scenario but is a bit farther from home. Both Ottawa and Montreal could use a player like Tavares so there is a need there.

IF Taveras doesn't resign where does he go? People's thoughts?
It seems like half of Toronto has moved out to Calgary. Calgary is a young city that is easy to get around with good schools and recreational opportunities.

On the hockey front, the Flames are re-tooling and value strong leadership. Our centres, other than Frost, are veterans with families.

Taveres would fit in here like a glove.

I wouldn't necessarily rule Calgary out of your equation.

Just ask his wife. She makes the decision . TML or full time dad is my say..

Tavares and Duchene are in the same boat. Both probably should be taking discounts with contenders to win.

It's not the right time for the Isles to make a splash like that IMO but I do hope they mend the bridge at some point. Would suck never being able to bring back one of their GOATs. I feel like everyone should have been able to move on by now.
