Speculation: Tavares landing spot?

I mean, he just put up 74 points and is pretty soundly outplaying Matthews and Marner in the playoffs despite less production.

There's also very few options for a center in free agency right now, and it isn't like the Leafs have a better option. With the cap jumping so high, I think 6M over 2-3 years is pretty reasonable. If he wilts, then it's not a long term deal anyway.
Leafs top 6 should be for game breakers only. I think that's the need Leafs need to solve for moving forward.

Knies Matthews Nylander
Cowan _______ _______

He's 35, so unless he's taking a discount...perhaps he should look at going elsewhere.

At a certain point, if the team doesn't want you back, it becomes a question on are you really going to beg when you've been a high level productive player? Pride kicks in. Especially if you get to July 1st and other teams are welcoming you with open arms.

Knies - Matthews - Nylander
Tavares - Bennett - Cowan

I can see him signing in Buffalo, as it's a 2 hour drive from Toronto. He and his wife don't want to leave the area.

That may or may not require Buffalo trading somebody out to make room.

Depends what he wants. A legit chance to win a Cup? I could see him signing in Florida (if Bennett walks) or Tampa. If he's just wanting a decent team close to home Montreal or Ottawa make sense.

If Tavares wants to sign for 4m per, would love to bring him back.

11m to Tavares, 11m to flippy back pass Mitch has been a disaster.
He won't sign for 4M, he has some pride. He will absolutely get about double that on the open market, getting him to take a discount will require Toronto to offer at maximum 10% less than his market value. Which according to both AFP Analytics and Evolving Hockey, is ~7.9M

If he walks my guess is a team like Chicago will be all over him

I am guessing Marner doesn't resign which should free up more than enough cash to resign Tavares and have other cash that they can use to tighten up other positions on the team

I'd take him in STL on a short term high salary deal, doubt he would have interest in coming here though as there will be better landing spots for him to try and get a cup.

Somebody will offer him 8mil x 4, same as Stamkos got. Don't think it will be Toronto. He may decide to take less to stay with Toronto, though. But I don't think Toronto is offering him the Stamkos deal. He comes back to Toronto at a discount, or he chases the biggest bag. Up to him.

Just not enough pride to fight back in the playoffs.

Oh I could see Barry Trotz doing it in a heartbeat. Probably give him a full NMC too

If he was a packaged deal with Marner I’d take him back in The Island. Not that he would ever do that though, my guess is back in TOR or in BUF.
