Unless Tavares gives Toronto a hometown discount(Which is possible) He will be headed to free agency. Here is my take on teams that could be a landing spot for him.

Taveras is settled with him family in Mississauga and Muskoka in the summers so I am going to guess three places that make sense IF he wants to stay close to home and Toronto doesn't resign him.

Buffalo, Montreal and Ottawa. I don't think Buffalo will target Tavares but I do see it as a good fit if Tavares wants to stays close to home. The other spots are Ottawa and Montreal. Ottawa also fits that scenario. Montreal could also fit into that scenario but is a bit farther from home. Both Ottawa and Montreal could use a player like Tavares so there is a need there.

IF Taveras doesn't resign where does he go? People's thoughts?

If Tavares wants to sign for 4m per, would love to bring him back.

11m to Tavares, 11m to flippy back pass Mitch has been a disaster.

I think the TML bring him back, just not for $11mil.

A 2yr deal worth $5mil a year would be decent for both sides. I think that gives TML a lot of room to bring back the same team but still make other adjustments.

Dude almost scored 40g...I don't think he's done yet.

I don't think he is part of the problem with the Leafs and will ultimately sign a deal with them. Probably between $6M-$7M for 2-3 years.
Why should Leafs sign him for 6m per. Isn't he 34?

Has he provided 6m worth of value in the playoffs?

Because he is still a pretty elite 2C in the league and when you look at alternatives they won't be a)as good, b)cost less than $6M.
He was. I don't think you want to depend on a 35+ player doing the same things as he did in his prime.

Chances are his slowness is even more exposed at 35+.

Best to put him on the wing and use him at C for injuries...only if he takes a huge discount.

He has entered his Jason Spezza Leaf era.

I agree that a move to the wing ultimately makes sense. As for the contract, I think he is well in him right to say give me the Claude Giroux deal and it would be hard to argue that isn't a reasonable comp.

I think he stays with the Leafs and signs a discount deal. He did so much and sacrificed a lot to get there. He’s still productive. I don’t see him wanting to leave Toronto.

I mean, he just put up 74 points and is pretty soundly outplaying Matthews and Marner in the playoffs despite less production.

There's also very few options for a center in free agency right now, and it isn't like the Leafs have a better option. With the cap jumping so high, I think 6M over 2-3 years is pretty reasonable. If he wilts, then it's not a long term deal anyway.

I think he'll be back as a Leaf, but he just scored 38 goals and is a center when its a position in particularly high demand. He could get offered twice that on a 2 year deal, and while he may give the Leafs a hometown discount not even Stamkos was willing to give Tampa that much.
