Bad games are fine, it's to be expected. I just want our coaching staff to do a better job at both trusting the backup and knowing when it's the right time to give Binnington a break as opposed to letting him play through a bad game. A starter will have to be able to play through bad games, and that's a skill that Binnington does have, but there's also times that he just sort of crumbles. Our coaches have never really found that healthy balance for him.

He allowed almost three more goals than is to be expected by an average NHL goalie given the volume and quality of shots that he faced. That’s how I can say he played a horrible game. Because he did.

Things rarely turn out as "expected" in sports, and life in general. I watched the game and he didn't play horribly. But whatever, I'm not arguing about it. I can't take people seriously who rely on advanced stats so much.

I watched it too. He did play a horrible game. Had Greiss allowed 6 goals against Minnesota given the same chances he faced we would be lamenting how bad he sucked. That still would’ve been a better performance than Binnington had against Montreal  I can’t take people seriously who bury their head in the sand and deny the obvious. You have nothing to support your argument other than “my feelies tell me so” and it’s laughably poor.

This is where my aggravation comes from. Our backup has a much higher save percentage than Binny. Keep in mind a great number of his games come on the back half of back to back games where the team is more apt to be winded, yet his numbers are a good bit higher. I'm not saying that Greiss is the best thing since sliced bread, but Binny gets excused for bad showing after bad showing. In my opinion, often times the team looks much more confident in Greiss when he's in net. We absolutely need to address defense, but that is not the end all of our problems. Perhaps sorting out the defense will finally leave people with no other option to accept that Binny's not playing up to the contract he was handed.

Yeah, Greiss isn't Husso level of last season, but he also isn't Chad Johnson level. There's no reason to run Binnington into the ground. Also important to note that Greiss' save % was just 90.3% before his shutout, so it's not like he's been 91.1% all season, and he gave up 4+ in 7 of those 11 starts.

Griess has been ok this year all things considered. Teams average around 37.8 shots for every game he starts not including the ones where he subbed in for Binnington. He's been getting shelled all year

How much of that difference is Binny handles puck so well it suppresses shots?
Honestly idk. I mean Greiss does get the b2b games a lot and the team is usually tired on those days and plays like shit in front of him.

Yea, I've stopped trusting goalie fancy stats. There's just no way you can watch some of the games we play and then go look at said stats and think, oh yea, a regular goalie shoulda stopped all but three of those shots. It's lunacy.

like, the 2nd Caulfield goal should be a 90% expected goal. You're a pure goalscorer who's literally walking out in front of the net with no one else around you. If the goalie stops that you should buy him a steak dinner.

Not to say Griess wasn't incredible though - he was. That save he made at the end of the second period was a 100% expected goal imo - I still can't believe he stopped it. It's straight out of the EA Sports NHL series playbook - cross crease pass with a guy to tap in on the short side.

This is hilarious because the team played worse defense(or Minnesota played better offense) in Minnesota than they did in Montreal  Habs generated 3.06 xG while the Wild generated 3.16. Greiss played a phenomenal game and Binnington a terrible game in Montreal. Our defense was no better(in fact, it was worse).

EDIT:This isn’t to say our defense is good or that Binnington is the only problem with this team. It isn’t and he’s not, but the difference between those two particular games was goaltending.

He allowed almost three more goals than is to be expected by an average NHL goalie given the volume and quality of shots that he faced. That’s how I can say he played a horrible game. Because he did.

It's clear that neither of you have any idea how to look at your fancy stats and then watch a game and understand anything. In the Montreal game I saw one goal I though Binnington should have had and that was the first one even though he was screened. The rest of them were complete breakdowns. I guess you guys also blame the giveaway behind our net on him too?
