I never understood that narrative on here. seems to me the price for Schenn was always 2 #1s. Lehtera was crap sandwich flyers had to eat to make it happen.
Convenience. We gained two things (geting Schenn and moving Lehtera's contract) and we lost two things of roughly equal value. It's easier to just say Schenn cost a first and moving Lehtera cost a first. However, if you go to a bar and order an expensive scotch on the rocks. the ice didn't cost $20 just because you paid with 2 20s.
Schenn was probably worth more than a first, but not quite 2 firsts. Figuring out what percentage of the package was for Schenn and what was for moving Lehtera is an excercise in futility. I doubt even Army and the Flyers GM would agree. Given what I remember about the Flyers cap situation at the time, I don't think they were too worried about taking on the contract. They had the cap space but needed it for RFAs the year after Lehtera's contract expired. So Army probably though Schenn was worth a first plus a little bit more and knew he'd have to pay extra to move out the cap. Wheras Hextall probably wanted 2 firsts for Schenn and like you said was willing to take Lehtera for nothing to make it happen.
So how much did we pay to move Lehtera? Who knows? A Better question: Why does it matter at this point
