That’s what Schenn and Barbashev are for.
I am not sure either would be my pick to be a mentor.
I generally think people give Schenn too much respect because he plays a style people like. Of all our core players during the Cup run he was the one I was underwhelmed by and consequent playoffs he was worse. The same can be said for his seasons in IMO. Sure he hits, but hitting isn’t everything.while we won’t likely be in the playoffs we need a mentality of playing that way during the regular season to some extent with young guys.
His defense is just ok. He disappears offensively at times and I find his effort goes through patches where I wonder if he wants to play.
Barbashev is an ok player who I like, but he isn’t much of a leader and we need guys who can lead by example defensively and Barby isn’t that.
We have the offensive talent coming up but we need more two way players / play. We need vets that lead by example in that way. Guys like Saad and ROR do that. But ROR is likely going to get a contract we cannot afford and I would assume he wants to be on a winner, which we probably won’t be for a while.
