A pair of three-game winning streaks will be on the line Thursday night when the Stanley Cup champion Tampa Bay Lightning visit the Toronto Maple Leafs.
The Lightning are coming off a 3-2 home win over the Washington Capitals on Monday, and the Maple Leafs defeated the Vegas Golden Knights 4-0 on Tuesday.
It will be the Lightning's first visit to Toronto since they won 10 of 13 games in the 2020-21 playoff bubble on the way to winning the Stanley Cup in the bubble in Edmonton.
In their 41 days in Toronto, the Lightning played out of different locker rooms at the Scotiabank Arena.
"The Columbus (Blue Jackets) games. ... we were in the Leafs' room for that," Lightning coach Jon Cooper said. "So it was a different type of setup. Yeah, so it will most definitely be different walking around that arena now. Especially with fans back in the building."
The game will be the opener of a two-game trip for Tampa Bay while Toronto will play the third game of a five-game homestand.
Toronto had production against Vegas from two of its top players who had been struggling. Auston Matthews scored two goals and Mitchell Marner had a goal and two assists.
"I definitely feel a lot better about my game," Marner said. "I think overall it's been a good couple of games here -- just got to make sure I keep going and just try and keep this mojo going."
Jack Campbell made 26 saves to earn his first shutout of the season, the fifth of his career and his third with Toronto. He will start against the Lightning.
"I thought right from the start we took control of the game, and I thought we maintained that all the way through," Maple Leafs coach Sheldon Keefe said. "We were good on special teams; the goaltending was certainly more indicative of what we think we're capable of."
Defenseman Travis Dermott did not participate in practice Wednesday. He is listed as day-to-day after blocking a shot on Tuesday.
Tampa Bay figures to be a better test for Toronto. Vegas had four key forwards on injured reserve.
"You know that is a short-handed team we're playing over there," Keefe said. "But as we all know, we've played against short-handed teams before and it hasn't gone like this here today, so I thought we did what we needed to do tonight in terms of taking control of the game and maintaining it."
Lightning defensemen Victor Hedman and Erik Cernak were absent from practice Tuesday for "body maintenance" after taking hits against Washington, but Cooper seemed optimistic both would play in Toronto.
A line created when Brayden Point joined Alex Killorn and Anthony Cirelli has accounted for seven of the 13 goals the Lightning have scored over the past three games.
"With those two guys, they play the game the right way, and they work their tails off and they're always in good spots and they're always responsible defensively," Point said. "So they're really fun to play with. I think the biggest thing is that they just work. So you've got to be working on that line. They've been getting rewarded for their work early in the season here."
Campbell in net.

If the Leafs can continue the run they've been on this should be a beauty.
Start on time and keep it up for 60 minutes.

Hope you boys and girls are ready for a little more of this tonight ;).

Morgan with a big night LET'S GO

So.... apparently rumours that Leafs have let know that one of their right side D-men (Dermott/Holl) are available for trade.

Holl has been a healthy scratch and Dermott plays the least minutes.

Tell me again why didn't we protect McCann again? Instead signing freakin' Ritchie to a 2.5 AAV to play on the 4th line.

Dubas 4D chess eh?

Dubas' flaws as GM were on full display at the expansion draft.

You never, ever drink the Koolaid with your own players. Bad form Dubas, bad form.

Nice chance to Level Up here after getting back on track against some weaker opposition.

TBay isn't quite what they were, and down their best player, but still a very good team.

Win this and we pass them in the standings, with a chance to pass Boston in the standings on Saturday and really put our bad start behind us.

Coming from a guy who isn't a fan of Holl's, really likes Liljegren, AND thought we could use scoring up front... Dubas did a good job with the expansion draft.

The McCann trade was great (either lose somebody you acquired for a mediocre prospect + late pick OR you got a 2nd line fwd for dirt cheap).

Protected the most valuable trade commodity (RHD on a good contract) over middle six forwards. You can trade Holl or Dermott for a forward, but Holl's value was certainly higher than McCann in the summer (and likely still is given their contract situation).

For all of his faults, Holl is a good #5 dman that can be used as a shutdown guy in the top 4 if he has a good partner... that's a super valuable commodity.

What you mean pass Boston in the standings? We're second in the Atlantic division with 11 points, Boston has 8

Points Percentage are the only standings that actually matter. Looking at the points-only standings deceives you into thinking losses don't matter, but they do.

(If you're not sure about this just remember that any time the NHL is faced with a situation where they need to rank teams that have not played the same amount of games - whether for the standings or for draft rank or waiver rank - they always use points Percentage, not points).

leafs had to protect Holl in the off season not being aware at the time if a Liljegren could actually handle the nhl . Now that liljegren seems to be a viable option they can deal a Holl or dermott . its the safer / sensible order of things

Yeah but wouldn't that be risky given leafs are 1 injury away from having to call up an AHL d man. Having both Dermott & Holl gives them good depth options should there be injuries. We'll see I guess, but I'm curious about these rumours of trading 1 of their D.

We had a good 3 game stretch, keep the momentum going. This one is going to be a real test, Tampa is much tougher than our last 3 opponents but if we play with the same energy/mindset/intensity we did against Vegas, we'll have a great shot at winning this one. Start on time again and play structured, even without Kucherov they are an elite team in this league. Big test and big opportunity to snag 2 points.

Seems we don't get game day updates as often now that the 'Ging' is no longer covering the team.
