The story behind this tweet is hilarious.

For those who don't know Pastrnak and Wilson were apparently doing a beer chug challenge in the bubble during the covid games. If Pastrnak won he'd have to fight Wilson at center ice, and Wilson would let him win. If he lost, well, he had to tweet that.

“I obviously lost a bet, okay, which I was really confident going into,” Pastrnak said. “And the bet was basically, if I lose, I’m gonna make this tweet. And if I win, me and Tom Wilson- because we played the round robin, right? We played against Washington. So, this bet happened before round robin. And if I would won, we would drop gloves and basically, I would throw a punch and knock the sh*t out of Tommy. That’s why he was saying, ‘I knew I was going to have to win this bet.’

“He gave it (his) all and he beat me by a mile. Not really gonna get into what the bet was, but he beat me by a mile. And yeah, so I tweeted out and it was kinda funny and it’s crazy. I still get the tweets to this day, you know, every goal he scored, I just get mentioned all night and that I was right. So yeah, I got absolutely roasted in that bet.”

Ryan Whitney, one of the hosts of the podcast, responded, “I know, he chugs beers so fast.”

The group laughed.

Come on. I could say that Celebrini was too small to play hockey in 2017. Why? Because he was 10 years old.

Why do I bring that up? Because Tom Wilson has been at a scoring at a 26 goal/82 for 8 seasons and it's been a long time since he was getting suspended every six months in 2017 and 2018.

He's a greasy, nasty piece of shit no doubt. But it's been a long long time since any fan was saying I'd never have that goon on my team.

While Wilson in recent times has toned down the rough stuff, there was a time in which his mere presence was as menacing as that of anyone in the league. Wilson would have been a star in any NHL era, something that is rare.

He probably woukd have been a more effective scorer in earlier eras when the average player was slower and not quite as skilled. Pity he’s dished out a number of questionable hits which has sullied his reputation.

1) I don’t think people questioned Wilson’s skill, he reached a certain level years ago where it clearly wasn’t a fluke and he could hold his own, scoring 50 points and putting fear into opponents.
2) He has recovered from his ACL much better than I expected, happy for him on that.
3) And he’s maybe toned it down as he’s gotten older, smart move. Rempe could never.

So far this season Wilson scored more goals than McDavid and Matthews.

and Who ever called him a goon didn't watch the 2018 Play offs

I don't think I'll ever understand people on the internet and their need to assure people that nobody ever said the thing they either a.) personally disagree with or b.) might have said and wish they hadn't.

What are we doing here? If you didn't say it... well great job, well done. Don't sit here trying to assure the world (including people with plenty of firsthand experience) that this was never a point of contention when he was clowned by people for being drafted in the first round, clowned for being signed long term, and then suddenly.... "oh everybody knew he could be a good player they just didn't like some of the hits" or whatever.

If the guy had faltered the victory lap headed the other way would be insane, but since he didn't and he's fully earned his contract on his way to career highs instead the collective has to begrudgingly start this "we all saw the potential" thing and it's so stupid. Just speak for yourself instead of finding an unnecessary way to be wrong.

It's so damn strange. There's nothing even wrong with saying that he was a goon at some point when he was definitely playing up (down?) to the title. A bit of shame associated with saying he wouldn't amount to much more than a 4th-liner, but you could even see the perspective on that a bit.

The attempts to act like other people are crazy and imagined all of it is bizarre.

IMO a goon has to be a player barely in the league

Like, Tom Wilson will play on most teams 2nd line or at worse, 3rd line

A guy like Xhekaj on the other hand, who I love a lot because of his intengibles, will never see time on a 2nd pairing, ever

Wilson started out as a player who was coached to take on more of an enforcer role in his first couple of years, to gradually balancing out the physicality with more of a scoring role (with a dangerous penchant to lose his cool and hurt people from time to time). Lately, though, he's more of a power forward than a player going out there trying to lay the body all that much or target opponents.

As the Caps have grown bigger and bigger, there just aren't that many Caps games where an opponent decides that its best bet is to turn the game into a punchfest. Their team size acts as a deterrent. Wilson doesn't play terribly physical and doesn't fight a ton, when compared with the past. He doesn't throw a lot of borderline hits any longer. Coaching wants him on the ice, not suspended. They have a lot of bigger players who haven't had to show it, partially by design and partially it's just the overall league trend.

Many are relying on recollections that are at least five and pushing 10 years old now. Back then many absolutely called him a talentless goon, though. Less so, recently.

Good coaching IMO. Coaching a guy to become useful everyday NHLer is what every player needs. For the majority of guys offense isn't going to come easily at the NHL level. But if all you are focused on is putting up points then a lot of times you're going to find yourself eating popcorn in the pressbox or riding the buses in the AHL as odds are the offense isn't just going to come naturally.

Once you're established then you get the extra playing time and maybe the scoring comes, but if it doesn't you have something to fall back on.
