Wow there are some epic bad takes in there from some regulars lol….
Had to read through it all, what a trip. Loved the guy who really wanted the Caps to ditch Ovi and BT (this was June 2017), who was never heard from again. So many dreadful takes, like "wish we kept Justin Williams instead of this disaster" from our favorite xls master.

Best actual take of the entire thread was from the late, great txpd. Miss that guy still.

Oshie will break and ride out and of his deal on ltir. That is my guess.

What a buffoon!

2018 obviously makes the Oshie contract worth it. It made the Kuznetsov contract worth it. It made the Orpik contract worth it. It would have made any bad deal worth it. Thems the breaks.

Williams did have two more good years after he left DC, at a far more manageable contract. I don't think preferring Williams was a crazy take. Who had DC winning in 2018? They were a longshot. Oshie's contract, along with others, has hamstrung the team since 2019. Him being in and out of the lineup has impacted their ability to bring in talent and build a roster.

It doesn't matter now because they won in 2018, but I'm comfortable with the analysis that led to the opinion.

Just say…..”I was wrong”…..…..man up.

Justin Williams last 3 seasons:

17-18 16+35=51
18-19 23+30=53
19-20 8+3=11 (done after 20 games)

Oshie:
17-18 18+29=47
18-19 25+29=54
19-20 26+23=49

Williams last two seasons after he left DC he was making 4.5 mil per….So hardly a massive difference. I take Oshie 100/100.

Williams also isn't being paid $5.75M to miss 38, 24, 30, and (presumably) 82 games from 2021-2025. Those were years the Capitals weren't really competitive, yet instead of being able to fit in a more impactful UFA or start letting a young guy get some meaningful time during a period where they really should have started retooling, they had to kind of fit Oshie and his cap hit in.

Like I said, it worked out. I was wrong because without having Oshie in 2018 maybe they don't win a Cup. But that's dangerous logic and relies on hindsight. The same rationale has been used to justify Backstrom's current contract when it was signed, or Wilson's current contract when it was signed. And I don't think either of those is looking too hot right about now.

No hindsight needed. A lot of smart people knew Oshie was worth keeping.

You were wrong about him, Orpik, late-stage Kuzy, and a lot of things.

It's ok. We all do this. Admitting it looks a lot better than sort-of admitting it while trying to rationalize or diminish the alternatives by basically saying "it was good for only one year".

Oshie was worth his deal without 2018.

Yep. Rarely do fans get to watch an Oshie-esque player. I was fine with his contract when it was signed, I’m more than fine with it including 2018, and I would have been fine with it without 2018.
