Speculation: T.J. Brodie to be bought out

Hawks have a long history of employing obviously washed-up veteran defensemen.

Brodie
Martinez
Scuderi-Erhoff
Jack Johnson
Timonen (this one was a feel-good story)
Sean O'Donnell
Cullimore
Kim Johnsson
Klemm
etc.

One of those guys that lost a step he couldn't afford to lose.

It impacts everything. When to make a move, how fast you can recover from a decision, how much time you have with the puck, how much time the opponent has to make a decision when you're bearing down on them.

Some guys... they're on step away from the whole house of cards falling.

Good description, Vlasic is another one I think. Tore his motivator muscle as well, but part of it is just realization you can’t do the same shit anymore.

That’s why I was lazy as f*** in my 20s. Never peak.

I really haven't watched TJ too much in recent years other than the odd Leaf game. I noticed at that time, or at least I think I did, that they were playing him at LD.

TJ, of course is a left shot D, but he was an RD in his glory years in Calgary.

I wonder how much of his play dropped off due to the switch.

His wife also suffers from Multiple Sclerosis which is a progressive and degenerative disease. Makes me wonder whether her condition has worsened over time and TJ's heart just isn't in it anymore.

Here is a 2023 article on TJ and his wife Amber.

Maybe Chicago can trade him for an overpaid forward that earns more salary but less cap hit...would really need to look around the league for a fit.

He played RD for us basically the first 4 years of the deal. He was so bad in the 5th year we were trying him on his natural side hoping he would at least be able to handle the puck
