Speculation: T.J. Brodie to be bought out

Don't they have to pay him his signing bonus no matter what? They owe him $2,450,00 on July first thus giving him abase salary of 775k for the season

His decline was seriously like a 90 degree drop. 4 really solid years for Toronto and then was terrible round 2 against the Panthers and brutal since

He had some family tragedies I honestly thought he would have bounced back after taking a year to get his head right but maybe he just lost a step. I figured it was mental. Too bad. He was unreal for the leafs until he immediately and aggressively was not

One of those guys that lost a step he couldn't afford to lose.

It impacts everything. When to make a move, how fast you can recover from a decision, how much time you have with the puck, how much time the opponent has to make a decision when you're bearing down on them.

Some guys... they're on step away from the whole house of cards falling.

Hawks d-men who were better than Brodie this season and will be on the roster next year: Vlasic, Levshunov, Rinzel, Kaiser, Korchinski, del Mastro, Allan and Crevier ... yeah, I don't think he's needed or wanted.

Oh, and unfortunately Murphy is still under contract for next year and even as bad as Murphy is - he was still better than Brodie.

It was so odd. Unfortunately his wife has MS and his father, a local legend in the Windsor area got sick right around the time he dropped off in the playoffs. He passed away I believe that fall.

I just assumed he would have been quite understandably been upset and when he processed it return to form.

Subban had crazy injuries. I don’t recall Brodie being injured. So odd to lose a step to become completely unplayable that young. He didn’t regress from 1-2 to a 4-5 like OEL.

He went from a 2-3 to like ECHL between round 1-2 of the playoffs.

I have never seen a player drop off as rapidly as he did

Went from being a top pair, defensive stud to basically unplayable
And yet our coaching staff continued to shoehorn him in a prominent role despite everything saying he shouldnt have been 🙃

Was the same shit with Gio. Dude was clearly beyond cooked yet had to keep playing him for some reason.

Yeah early on he was terrific for us but he fell off an epic chasm, for a few reasons.

his buyout saves us about $260K over 2 years. Maybe just IR him for the season? his bonus is 2.5 and his salary is $775 buyout is not really worth it.

I couldn't remember one good game he had this year. I do remember he scored a goal late to help us win a game. Good player for a long time, not trying to be disrespectful to him, but he is absolutely toast.

If that's the case, maybe they look to swap him for someone just as shitty in the hopes a new team helps boosts both

Always seemed like a quality guy that has been through some shit the last couple years. Put in some good years with the Leafs. Don't like talking bad about him but his time has obviously come as a player in this league.

Brodie was always a solid soldier and reportedly great quiet farm boy. Did a lot of the quiet things, like a budget Tanev. His last year in Toronto though.. How could anyone watch that season and think he had more to give?

TJ Brodie was one of the most underrated defencemen in recent memory. The guy just ate up minutes and was as dependable as a Toyota Land Cruiser.

But after his last season in Toronto, it should have been clear to anyone that there was no gas left in the tank, the wheels had fallen off, and he'd tumbled down a cliff. It was literally the end of Richard Hammond's truck in the Bolivia Special.

That's what I thought. Is it really worth buying him out. I would just tell him sit at home and work out for a few months get him back in the lineup around December and see if you can make something out of it at the deadline(even if it's for a 7th round pick)
