The chants were impossible to ignore. So were the posterboard signs. Most importantly, so was the performance. Michigan State star Isaac Howard could win the Hobey Baker as college hockey’s top player this season, and his game Friday night showed why.
“I’d be hard pressed to find someone more qualified,” Michigan State coach Adam Nightingale said. “I think you look at the season he's had and how our team has played.”
Howard's case is strong, and Friday's win shows why. To Nightingale, it’s the way that Howard plays at both ends that makes him a candidate for the Hobey Baker. He leads the nation in scoring, but he also kills penalties and shows up, especially when his team needs him, as he did against Minnesota.
“Without Ike, I think there's a huge void there, right?” Nightingale said. “So you look at the season we've had, we still got a lot of hockey, but he's a huge piece of it. Definitely should be in the conversation.”
