TSN: Sweeney praised by other GMs for work on TDL day

Still hate the Marchand isn't a Bruin but I can stomach a 1st a lot better than a late 2nd
Nothing says he can not be a Bruin again next season. Not sure the term or the Dollar value Marchand will be looking for. but I feel confident that both the Bruins and Marchand will discuss the option of him returning to Boston

Truly I doubt he comes back. Why would he try to negotiate with DS again. If there were a new GM maybe. But right now he is living the high life in Florida and potentially winning another Cup. We can't offer him any of that. Once you see what else is out there its hard to come back to the team that didn't value you enough in the 1st place.

“His concern with Boston was that the GM maybe has 1-2 years left,” a source said to RG.

It wasn’t just Sweeney’s contract status that gave Tocchet pause, though. Sweeney also has a reputation for firing coaches early in their tenures. Sweeney has fired three coaches during his time with the Bruins, including two in the last three years.

He was concerned for two reasons,” a different source said to RG. “Sweeney’s status and Sweeney’s track record with his head coaches.”

Still time to clean house Charlie!
"early in their tenure" is the biggest pile oh poppycock I've heard. Bruce was one of the longer tenured coaches in the league at the time. Julien had finished up what ~10 years? and the fact that Monty was turning down their extension offers was 100% public knowledge.

All the coach he fired won coach of the year coaching in an awesome city and were hired seconds after they were fired. What was there to be scared? His lost.

I didn’t want Tocchet so it’s all good.

Oh yeah! Freddy was so bad I blocked him out of my existence!

This is my thought too sadly. I think once the band-aid's been ripped off, it's been ripped off so to speak. Florida's a great team, he seems to be fitting in well both on and off the ice, there's a bunch of his buddies from the 2011 team working in the front office, sunshine weather, low taxes... I wouldn't be surprised at all if he re-signs with them at a discount.

He had a great trade deadline

So now that it's official that Boston will be getting a future 1st round pick for Marchand let's look at the final tally for this year's trade deadline:

2026 5th round pick ( to Colorado )

2025 2nd round pick ( from Carolina via Colorado ) 55th overall
2025 4th round pick ( from Philadelphia via Toronto ) 100th overall
2026 1st round pick ( from Toronto ) top 5 protected, top 10 protected in 2027 and unprotected in 2028

His former linemates during his 4th line days.

Boy, Bill Zito loves to dangle the conditional first round picks…it almost feels like a Ponzi scheme.

At the deadline in 2022 he traded his 2024 1st round pick to Philly in the Giroux trade. It was top 10 protected and would push to 2025.

Then In July of 2022 he traded that 2025 1st in the Tkachuk trade. Of course, it was contingent on the 2024 1st not being pushed to 2025…which would have pushed this pick to 2026. This pick was also top 10 protected as well.

So at this year’s deadline when he traded for Seth Jones the 2024 was not a top 10 and had transferred to (Edmonton via Philly) meaning the 2025 was going to Calgary. But the 2025 top 10 protection was not officially determined yet so the 2026 1st that he sent to Chicago had to be conditional on that 2025 top 10 protection.

By the time he was working out the deal with Boston his 2027 was listed as part of a condition on a the Jones trade but it seemed very unlikely that the Panthers would collapse to a top 10 pick in 2025 which would mean the Jones trade would be a 2026 and the Bruins conditional pick would be a 2027. With all that said the 2027 1st is also top 10 protected and could still push it to 2028 if the Panthers fall off a cliff in the 2026/27 season.

So, we wont know if this is a 2027 or a 2028 pick until the 2026/2027 season has come to an end. The Best case scenario, and stay with me on this one, would be that the Panthers fall off the cliff in 2027 and their pick is a top 10. That would push the pick to 2028 and it would NOT be protected, so if the Panthers tanked again…and the Bruins won the draft lottery this could be a first overall pick.

That is all fantasy and the most likely scenario is that the Bruins get the 2027 and it is between 25-32, still a good value asset for an expiring UFA contract for a 37 year old who was injured with no guarantees of even returning, let alone contributing. Especially when you consider that Sweeney was actively trying to “do right” by his Captain, he took a gamble and bet on Marchand and the Panthers and it paid off.
