1996: 6th place
1997: silver
1998: gold
1999: bronze

as you can see, sweden where amazing in the 90s in world championships. Only missing medals one time. 3 golds.

Why is this so forgotten in the hockey world? People always talked about how good Czech Republic where in WC in the 90s, and they where, but so was Sweden.

You see quite many say that it was not until early 00s that Sweden become a top nation in hockey, but facts from the 90s say otherwise. Sweden was a superpower in ice hockey in the 90s aswell.

The downfall of Soviet Union was a big part of this. Czechoslovakia was on crossroads and Finland was preparing for their run.

Should have beaten Canada at the 1996 World Cup if not for like 7 posts and rotten luck.

There was a time when the world championship was just a coin toss between Sweden, Canada and Czech Republic. Russia broke that in 2008.

Or maybe...Sweden was just good?

why did not finland, germany, Switzerland etc take as many medals as sweden if it was only becuse downfall of soviet?

Also even with Soviet downfall, Russia was still very strong in the 90s.

What finland run are you even talking about? They took 1 gold in the 90s, sweden won 4 gold (og 1994)

Between 1963 and 1991 only four countries had medals in World Championships. Soviet Union, Czechoslovakia, Sweden and Canada. West Germany, United States and Finland had medals in Olympics during that time period but not in Worlds.

It was good for Sweden when the best players from Eastern Europe finally left for North America. But do not forget the strangely forgotten European Cup where Swedish teams managed 3 straight victories after years of underperforming.

Finland lost much finals! They destroyed all teams 94 and lost vs Canada in OT for example. Sweden won 4 titles yes.
But weren't always the best tournament team.

Sweden took medals in 8 times of 9, so you saying sweden was not always good tournament team makes no sense. Sweden took more medals in the 90s than Finland did.

Well, Sweden had lots of NHLers aswell. So you cant blame on that.
Sweden probably would have performed better during the 70's and 80's if the top guys was back in Europe and available for the national team.

Sweden took lots of medals in the 70s and the 80s but not many golds. NHLers did play quite often. As did NHLers from russia and czechia in the 90s.

Sorry what did I write? I wrote that Sweden was NOT ALWAYS THE BEST TOURNAMENT TEAM. I didn't write that Sweden wasn't always a good tournament team. For me e.g. Finland the best tournament team at the World Cup and Olympia 94. Others won gold. Also in 2006 Finland was the best team in the tournament, but Sweden won the final. In 2019, Russia was the best tournament team, but Finland won the tournament.

This thread is about World Championship not other tournaments.

But sure if we gonna bring that up. Sweden reached semifinals in canada cup 1991. 1992 olympics Sweden was good in group stage but lost in QF to Czechia. 1994 gold in OG. 1996 World Cup, very good tournament from Sweden, won all games in group stage and took Canada to OT in semifinal. 1998 Olympics, win over USA and Belarus. Lost to Canada and Finland. Not good tournament for us.

Well, the Canada Cup doesn't really count! And now the Olympics, let's scratch something. To avoid misunderstanding, Sweden was obviously very good, but the way they played hockey wasn't that nice. I remember how it used to be said: "The Soviets play dream hockey and Sweden a rather dirty game". Just like Italy in football. Successful but not beautiful. That's probably the reason why there isn't that much talk about Sweden in the 90s.

Canada Cup was best on best. Look at the rosters from that tournament.

Actually i think Sweden is still boring to watch. Most fun to watch is Russia and Switzerland.

Yes, of course, the Canada Cup was "Best on Best", but it has the character of a friendly tournament.

Sweden have always played fast paced, elegant, creative, skillful hockey. Our teams play a much better brand of hockey than our sisu-shithousing neighbours for example. The swedish way of playing is entertaining. I think USA teams are the most entertaining to watch nowadays though. They generally play with more flair than Canada.

Russia are not as entertaining as they used to be anymore for me. They prioritize defensive coaches like Bragin at almost every level nowadays. Prefer watching some high tempo Czech games if we are talking about European teams. Czech national team games always involve chaos. USA, Sweden and Czechia are the most entertaining of the big 6 nations to me.
