Lidstrom - Karlsson
Salming - Hedman

Finland:

Amazing topic... nice teams. Over the last 40 years the Swedes would have a big edge in talent pool but the 2 teams above look very even. I think it'd go to OT in Game 7 and HF would melt in the process.

Ruutu, Teräväinen, Salo aren't particularly close to making such team if all players from the last 40 years are available. Or Pettersson for that matter.

I think the Swede D would be the difference when I look closer... Finn's have nice D but Salming and Lidstrom is a heck of a start. Then you still have peak Hedman and peak Karlsson. That is 3 Norris winners to 0. Then Salming on top of the 3 Norris winners. I assume all players are assumed to be at their peak.

ya, its sweden by a good bit.

if you had to make one super team out of all of them, Timmonen and Numminen MIGHT make it, Kurri, Selanne, Barkov, maybe Aho. The rest is Sweden and heir higher end is higher, too, Selanne and Kurri are the only real bigtime players.

Impressed, though, because I have done this exercise in the past and it was more lopsided - Finland has been cranking out good players recently.

Only Forsberg is clearly better than Barkov. Tikkanen matches well against any Swede not named Forsberg.

tikkanen is a poor man’s Zetterberg.

Similar sandpaper forward with way, way less offensive ability.
Zetterberg captained teams and managed 90pt seasons. Tikannen played on a line with arguably the most talented duo ever, in the 80s, and managed a couple of 70 point seasons.

Both Tik and Z stepped it up in the playoffs.

And Sundin and Alfredsson are better than Zetterberg. I would have a hard time putting Tik over the Sedin’s or Nilsson, although i like his style a lot more than those.

Tikannen is more equivalent to Landeskog (who i would have on here over Petterson, unless i chose Zibenijad instead)

Thats the Team Sweden which were allways the true pain in the ass against Finland. If played seven game series, we might get luckily some victories but otherwise Sweden will trash us.

This is how I’d merge team Nordic

Team Nordic:
Kurri - P. Forsberg - Selanne
Nilsson - Sundin - Zetterberg
Markus Naslund - H. Sedin - D. Sedin
Loob - Barkov - Alfredsson

Lidstrom - Karlsson
Salming - Hedman
Dahlin - Numminen (shoe horned in to not make it an all Swedish D)

Lundqvist

i mostly agree, though not as sold on Dahlin… yet.

so, four Finns. ya.

i could handle Tikannen or Lehtinen in Loob’s spot. Loob was a skilled beauty, and I know Swedes just love him, there were just so many guys that scored 50 in that era.

anyways, ya. same page.

Tikkanen had his best season without Gretzky, his role with Wayne didn't help his stats one bit.
did not know that. i believe you!

still a very high scoring team and era. Tikkanen has an aura about him and he did a lot of good work out there, i just see him as a solid two way guy with a personal flair to him. Mikko Koivu is just as good, imo, and Landeskog, Lehtinen, R. O’Reilly… all players that I LOVE, btw, and i would take a team of them in a heartbeat, to go with my Ohlund, Foote, Daneyko defense.

What has Dahlin done to come ahead of Numminen or Timonen? A strange choice if there ever was one.
Both of those d can also go on my ‘better than people seem to think’ all around dmen.

I think he is projecting a bit with Dahlin.

Was Sweden a bigger favorite in 1998 than in this hypothethical matchup? I think Sweden looks better on defense but I think the games would be close. It's not like Finland has useless players like Aki-Berg.

wonderful mention of Aki Berg. 😂

any Team Finland, but especially this one, can grind out a good showing vs anyone, imo.

Nah. Finland always do well against better teams. Finns have more grit than swedes.

Niinimaa was superb in Philadelphia and Edmonton, just crashed and burned after the 2004 incident which wasn't even his fault.

very true. I mean, you are a very self-loathing Swede, but, as a fan of the team it drives me crazy how non-determined they are to do what it takes to win.

Off course Im projecting. Otherwise there’s several other swedes in the mix who could challenge Numminen - Norstrom, T. Jonsson, K. Jonsson, OEL, C. Johansson, U. Samuelsson, Ohlund among others
