WJC: Sweden 2019 Roster Talk

Safe to say Bemström now rivals Elvenes as the best Swedish winger for this WJC. Elvenes was better last year, and on the same ice at the summer showcase this season, but since then his problems with the coach at Rogle have held him back.

Hopefully, Elvenes gets traded to a team that will use him as a top line option, if Rogle won't. Bemström on the other hand just seems to be getting better every time I see him.

Elvenes has been somewhat overrated for a while now.

He seems pretty dangerous at ES when I watch him play, even if not all those opportunities are going in right now. Also, he's shooting at 35% but I take your point.

Even if he turns into a PP specialist, this year's WJC team is not exactly brimming with top line forward talent for the PP like last year's team was. A PP specialist would still be a welcome addition to give Liljegren and Brannstrom some help on the man advantage.

How do you not put Berggren on your lineup? He's more skilled than all of those forwards, and he's playing SHL hockey.

Not only are there at least 2 clearly better goalies than Eriksson EK, he's also suspended the first 2 games. Guess you get a free ticket to the WJC if you are great at the age of 15-16, probably as the starter too.
 
 
I’ve been following the 99 and 00 players in Sweden pretty close in the last couple of years and here’s the team I’m currently think is the best.

Elvenes-Lundeström-Bemström
Hållander-Olofsson-Zetterlund(?)

If Gustafsson is still injured or if he’s not coming back in his best shape I think Rickard Hugg should be one of my candidates as a 4th line center, great all around player who understands the game well, very strong along the boards and net and can also be productive in the oz. Great penalty killer. Only question mark is his skating ability (haven’t seen him since last summer though). Oskar Bäck shouldn’t either be a bad pick as a 4th line center who pulled up some great stats in the begging of the season in Allsvenskan. Also good 2 way center with great hockey-sense.

Replacement for Zetterlund if he can’t make it back from his injury I would probably pick Höglander, Wernblom or Berggren.
Höglander is more skilled than Wernblom with great skating ability who also can play a physical game despite his small size, negatively is that Höglander so far haven’t made a strong opening in the SHL.
Wernblom is a more gritty player which I think is missing in this Swedish team, he also produced great numbers in the start of Allsvenskan this year. However am I a little bit concerned about his skating ability.
Berggren is one of a player that can switch pattern in games and crate dangerous in the oz with his grate scoring and passing ability. Great skating and is always moving his feet’s. Problem with Berggren is that he’s currently loosing too many 1v1 duels, needs to get stronger around the boards and net. (That’s why I think Montèn choosed to not pick Berggren in his team in the 4nation that’s coming up).

I have a strong feeling Brännström is going to get a call up just before the tournament rolls along.

If I had to guess he'll get a call up after the tournament. GMGM likes to overcook his prospects and find international tournaments to be valuable development opportunities.
 
No Berggren!? I expected he would be a top player on this team.

Usually takes a while for players like Berggren to make an impact in the SHL. Would players like Svenningsson or Wernblom be able to do anything good in the SHL? Don't think so. Berggren is always good or dominant against junior competition, that's why we can't afford to leave him at home.

I like Berggren very much as a player but he’s absolutely not an lock for WJC. He should be up there and sniff for a spot though. To play in WJC you can’t just deliver in the Superelit team, I don’t think he has underperformed in SHL but to make a spot in WJC you need to make more impact than he’s done yet in SHL.

Absolutely it’s a big difference against Allsvenskan and SHL and I don’t think Sveningsson and Wernblom would be able to do the same in SHL, but when your heading to WJC I thinks it’s better to pick a player that preformed in Allsvenskan with great confidence and much ice time than picking a player that hasn’t performed so well in SHL. Even though Wernblom isn’t one of my favorites I think he still should be a name for team, it’s just he’s physical play and battle instinct that I think is missing in this team. However I think he’s skating ability will stop him from making the team.

If your thinking from a bigger perspective I think absolutely that Berggren should make the team instead of Sveningsson and Wernblom, but you also have to think of the current status on the players.

I think this is the hardest decision that Montèn and the staff behind him have to made. It’s still 2 months until the team should be set and it can happen a lot of things until that.

MODOs best forward this season in my opinion, u have players like Karlkvist or Björklund that made more points, but overall I think Wernblom has been better.

I haven't seen so much other games than MODO this season, but if he is far down at the reserve list other players must been amazing.

Wernblom loves to battle, often very good in important games and sequences too, for example against US at the U-18 WC last season, it's a player u really like to have in your team.

He has to continue his progression for playing in this WJC, like everyone else, but I think his mentality are very good to have in a team, u have also creativeness and hard work too.

Next step for him is to take out his defenseman with speed, according himself in a interview recently, so he knows what to improve.

If he doesn't make the team this year, he probably will next year, so he could see this more like a big bonus. Everything to win, nothing to lose.

The biggest win is that he has taking a bigger role in MODO, and have a coach that really trust him, which is very good for his development as a player.
