Kings Article: Sutter Downplays LA Kings Forward Prospect Andy Andreoff Scoring First NHL Goal

When did he complain about his ice time? He said nothing of the sort during my interview with him.

“It’s been a tough year, but I’ve learned a lot, and I’m trying to stay positive, working hard every day in practice, trying to get better and be ready,”

“But yeah, there’s been some tough times this year where I’ve been down, disappointed about my situation.”

“Even though I’ve been in a situation before where I sat out a lot, during my first year in [Canadian major] junior [hockey], you want to be out there, so it’s really hard to be watching and not playing,”

^ That is a complaint about ice time, not saying he is blaming anyone but it IS a comment about his ice time that Sutter riffs on the next day.

As I said, ice time was not the main topic of the interview...but he made the choice to mention it which may have been on Sutter's mind the next day when he took a little dig at Andy.

Every young player in that situation gets disappointed about their situation, and they talk with their coaches about it. It's not like he has whined and moped. He's remained positive throughout.

Sutter had no idea Andreoff made that comment to me.

The fact is, coaches would much rather have a player in that situation being unhappy about it. There would be something seriously wrong if they weren't.

With all due respect, you've misread this situation by a rather wide margin.

Yours truly attempted to ask Sutter about Andreoff’s development and improvement this season, and how he has handled the adversity of not being in the lineup often. But before I could finish asking the question, Sutter cut me off.

Sutter knows you are a reporter, and knows Andy doesn't play much, and knows you talked to Andy about his first goal, and you begin to bring up ice time...

I would guess we both think Sutter's quote the next day was a message to Andy, if so I don't think I am misreading the situation very much at all. Sure, I may be making an extra leap when I suggested it may have been a rebuke to Andy for his public comments (not complaints mere comments) regarding ice time...but either way I bet on some level it will cause Andy to give up less info in an interview next time for fear Sutter will jab him again.

I am sure coach, player, GM have been very open with Andy's role and what he needs to do for more time etc and I see no negative comments from Andy nor did I suggest it. My original purpose jumping in was to highlight what another hall of fame coach thought of rookies, knowing Sutter is old school I would guess he doesn't think rookies should even be talking to the media at all lol.

Please provide your evidence that Sutter knows that I spoke to Andreoff.

You're guessing. You don't have any facts to support that. I know for a fact that he had no idea.

Fact is, Sutter had no idea. His response to questions about Andreoff is so typical of him whenever we ask him about a young player that his response was predictable.

It's not a guess that it was a message to Andreoff. It's fact, really. It's typical of Sutter to totally downplay and criticize young players. Does it every time, and he's done that since he arrived in LA.

Based on experience,I doubt very highly that Sutter's comments will affect Andreoff's interaction with the media. Besides, I've interviewed him at least 2-3 times each season prior to him making the big club this season, so he know me quite well.

Kid scored his first goal, of course you and everyone else were going to talk to him...then later you are interviewing Sutter and he cuts you off when it turns to ice time. I accept that you are closer to things and am not trying to stir anything up just looked at the timeline and saw a possible connection is all. I am not even the first one here to see that same coincidence so maybe its how you structured the article, the reader might see the 2 parts of it as related?

Are you implying that Sutter isn't a fan of your writing?

For all you know, he could be the President of your fan club, The Gannatics.

He said it elsewhere, Gann. You aren't the only Kings reporter. As a matter of fact, I seem to recall he might have mentioned something in his post-game interview on the ice.

took420s has a good point. Sutter probably verbally kicked the kid's ass for his public complaints.

Still, I think it was a little much from Sutter. Believe me, I have joined in standing ovations for Sutter at both rallies in 2012 and 2014 and enthusiastically so. I've waited the entire length of the Kings' existence for a Cup, and now I got two thanks to Daryl. Kurrillino's dripping sarcasm below notwithstanding, Sutter isn't perfect. He needs to dial it back a bit, sometimes.

A Monkey or the hot-dog salesman from section 319 could coach that lineup to a cup.
Sutter is actually holding us back.

Just remember when the Kings played their best hockey.
Right after Murray was fired and before Sutter placed them back into position they hated so much when coached by Murray.

If we would have at least a AHL level coach we would totally dominate have already 120 points and 30% powerplay.

Sometimes, readers make incorrect assumptions. Can't say I blame them, but oftentimes, trying to read between the lines doesn't reveal anything close to what actually happened.

Wait...what? I'm not the only reporter covering the Kings?? No way! :P

I didn't hear Andreoff's post-game interview, so I can't comment. However, he didn't talk about that in the dressing room after the game, and I was the only reporter who spoke with him at practice the next day, and that was AFTER we spoke to Sutter.

How did you deduce that was sarcasm? Sounded pretty serious to me.

“He’d say he’s had a tough year, but I wish someone would pay me $700,000 to break a sweat for an hour a day,†Sutter said, bluntly. “I don’t think it’s tough here. He should be very thankful that he’s in the environment that he’s in.â€

I think we are splitting hairs here, but that is the quote that led me to connect Andy's quote with Sutter's.

Again, all due respect and I am only doing this so you can see where my confusion is I always enjoy and appreciate your interviews:

You have this "separator" in your article
The next day, after practice, Sutter’s tune turned a bit more ornery.

-Then some Sutter quotes with him downplaying the goal

-Then some quotes from Andy where he talks about it being a "tough year"

-Then Sutter gives the quote I highlighted, says he knows Andy would say its been a "tough year" and ribbs him some more...causing me to connect Andy's quote with Sutter's extra downplaying.

You say the interviews were a day apart and Sutter's comments came first, but I don't see how as a reader I would know that when you grouped those quotes in with each other the way you did. I don't think its as simple to say I made an assumption, you kind of lead me there?
