Sudbury Wolves 2024-25 Season Thread, Part IV

So out of 10 rounds Wolves picked 5 Americans. Could it be that our Ontario boys do not want to report to Sudbury?? Could it be that our "infamous" GM's reputation is causing Ontario boys to play elsewhere??
With all our American picks, maybe Wolves switching leagues to USHL. Lol

Well with the draft over, makes me miss the days where we had rookie camp in May. Looking forward to seeing all the players on the ice, despite not understanding the draft strategy.

Could always be worse, we could be Niagara drafting 5'5" forwards with 2 points on the season.

That's the only logical play to bringing in an 07 goalie. Which is a massive failure on the management for trying a 3rd year. Means they keep Walton, Mews and Villy all year and we open the new arena with a bottom dwelling team.

Bringing in an ‘07 goalie might mean nothing more than the wolves believe they drafted a viable goalie, and do not want to use an OA spot on a goalie.

You are right there is no guarantees but yes let's use an asset to prevent someone else from signing him for his likely only year in the league.

Other than 1st round fliers which give an additional asset a draft pick should be used on a player that can potentially help the team in a year or 2 and you feel you have a reasonable chance at signing.

There is one question i have as the vast majority of players in the priority draft are 09s and it's for @OHL4Life. Will players like Provorov and Cameron as an 08 and 07 respectively do they count towards the 3 priority draft rookies we can play?

Teams can sign up to four 16 yr old true rookies to full player cards, their first two selections and any other two.

The wolves drafted a goalie in the 12th round that played 4 games for USA in the last Hilnka-Gretzky cup. If the kid is a regular in one or two seasons for the wolves, it is great value at that spot imo.
Cool, here's the problem we are a team that collapsed in the back half, got swept again for the 3rd straight year and 4th playoff in a row. We haven't won a 2nd round game in over a decade. We know what happens with this management if they think we may have a chance look what it cost us last year Jackson plus 8 picks in rounds 2-3. We now have 5 goalies for 2 spots, 3 with affiliate spot whether it's Cubs or another Nojhl team, maybe they go left field and go full Stoufville instead of a player or 2.

Bottom line is management needs to pick a path and stick to it not sit on the fence. We can't win playing maybe maybe not. We should be rebuilding simply from the fact once we get the Hage pick back from 2026 - 2029 we have 2x 2nds and 2x 3rds total, gee that looks familiar it's what it cost us for Roberts. Without touching prospects we have enough assets for a Roberts with this management.

pretty sure that the wolves have not won a single game in round two since 2007! :)

I’m not sure what your problem with the wolves is; do you think the wolves are so loaded with 2007-08 born that they should have drafted ‘09 born exclusively?
About half of the roster last season was made up of ‘05s & OAs, drafting some more OHL ready 2007-08 born US players might keep the wolves from disheartening prolonged losing streaks for 1.5 seasons if/when Mews, Villeneuve, & Walton are no longer on the team.

Will it be possible Sudbury deals Roberts to Oshawa in the off season to play with his brother. Oshawa will need a solid LD OA on the backend.

He’s not solid but a rebuilding team making its first rounder happy? It wouldn’t be the first time

No. There are only about 10 guys who pull that stuff per year and it’s usually the first round. This is legitimately their opinion on best player available and every team is taking more chances on Americans. We’ll see how this plays out.

So almost 2 decades, my that's a long time. I mean .

My problem is the Cameron pick, I don't have an issue with Provorov look week up front and young on d, this is scheduled to be a down year.

We used an 09 pick on an 07 goalie who is also a NCAA committed goalie so a one and done player. I see it as taking time away from Beities and Leonard, blocking their path, we have enough trouble developing goalies as it is.

Depending on how the season goes Mews, Villy, Walton and Pharand only have this season left. Pharand would be an OA, Walton and Villy like Musty won't be eligible to come back for the OA season they have NHL contracts.

with the amount of U.S. players drafted seems to be some kind of strategy, maybe a little bit under the radar from Ontario kids. Wonder what kind of commitment they have given to the organization in coming to play or come to camp.

As far as I'm aware, OHL teams are allowed to protect up to 50 players, so I tried to throw together a listing of who the wolves might currently have rights over. I'm sitting at 51, I would guess you can probably take off McCharles or Eccleston. They'd also have to have spots for the upcoming U18 draft so you can probably cull some of the other older depth. Nothing too serious, and obviously not ordered by much of anything. Positions are based on the wolves OHL roster if listed there, and the ohl draft list otherwise.

Once again, probably some mistakes in here, but thought it was fun to just see all the names together, it is the offseason after all.

McCharles, Eccleston and Bruce are probably you low hanging easy releases.

Cameron might not be a one and done goalie. He probably would not be a NCAA starter until he was 20 or 21. Maybe he signs with wolves and plays well; then traded at the ‘27 deadline. It could buy time for Beites to develop if he decides to sign with the wolves.
What would be your expected return on a U16 ON kid selected in round 12?

Likely agree with you, leaves one more to go if they make 3 U18 picks, Bronas would sadly make sense as I think that dream is dead at this point. Once again, all armchari GM'ing, the actual protected list could be very different.

Could be but don't see it being far off. With 2 goalies coming in its likely Bronas and/or Chartier off the list. If Cameron commits you are looking at Cameron and Mashall as the tandem. Then need to consider the options on Beities and Leonard. Don't forget there is also the import draft.
