Sudbury Wolves 2024-25 Season Thread, Part IV

You know it's not that hard to watch these kids play? Plenty of online streaming services can cover Minor Midget in this day and age.

Early night for the wolves scouts, back at it tomorrow. Can't say that I'm super excited after 3 picks, but it's all magic beans until they hit the ice for the wolves.
Yeah, I bet you sit there and watch Minor Midget games all the time. I will reserve judgement until I actually watch them play.

Let’s admit a bit underwhelming to say the least. Not what I was expecting. Taking a gamble on an American which we don’t have a really good track record with.

We needed some immediate injection is size and skill IMO. Of course could be proven wrong come September and I hope I am.

I agree with you there, in that I was somewhat surprised by the picks. Provorov is intriguing to me... not a lot of info out there about him. I was also hoping for more skill, but stats don't always tell the whole story and a few of those high scoring forwards went right before our pick. I respect the passion. I will say, height isn't everything, though. Pharand is 6'3, Walton is 6'6 and both play like they are 5'5. The scouting report on Bennett is that he is a physical player.

Need to put the puck in the net to win games, Walton does that. Once Walton and Villenueve graduate not sure whose putting the puck in the net on this squad from current players nor prospects.

Fair on Walton but he put up over 80 points. I think the guys they picked could have went later IMO. Too many players were still on the board and had good OHL cup and we left them out and took guys like you said we don’t know much about. Scouts don’t miss on reports on eligible drafted players. I didn’t see much on our 2nds. That’s all I will say.

Yeah, my comment was not meant to be a knock on Walton. I am a fan of him, the point is just that he doesn't really use his size all that effectively.

Not physically, but I would definitely argue he uses that reach more effectively then almost any player in the OHL. His ability to move the puck side to side and make some defenders look absolutely silly is definitely putting that size to use. Just not in the way wolves fans like to see.

I agree wait until I see the picks, to make a judgement.

If you look last year draft first 3 picks for the Wolves, Blonda is the only kid I like. Dean and Doucet need work, I think we could have done better looking back.

Hopefully these three picks can jump in lineup sooner than later.

There's been lots of criticism of Papineau - particularly over some trades and other things - but I've been happy with how he has drafted during his tenure. I'd give him a B+. We'll see how the 09' crop turns out. Here's a list of recent years drafts:

2020 - Goyette (1st, NHL), Delic (2nd), Konyen (4th), Collins (5th, NHL), Hoover (10th), Mauro (11th)
2021 - Musty (1st, NHL), Assadourian (2nd), Mania (4th, NHL), Derbidge (5th), Bishop (7th), Di Giantomasso (8th)
2022 - Villeneuve (1st, NHL), Walton (2nd, NHL), Walton (4th), Protz (5th, NHL), Marshall (13th)
2023 - Taylor (1st), Jackson (2nd), Chitaroni (3rd), Connors (4th), Clayton (7th)
2024 - Blonda (1st), Dean (2nd), Doucet (3rd), Smith (7th), Kearns (8th)

U18 - Krawchuk, Henderson

I'd give him a C maybe C+ if I'm being nice. What's a key position missing from all these lists? A GOALIE, what do we still not have from this year's draft? A GOALIE and because of wasted assets after our 3rd rd pick that was traded to Ottawa we watched another 3 of the top goalie prospects go elsewhere.

As of this moment in a clear rebuilding year (I pray the team realizes that this time) we are set to walk into the season with two 19 year old goalies. Beites isn't signed yet and going into this season as i believe his draft year he will be 17, he could potentially be gone after this season to NCAA, remember he didn't go jr a he went to SAC.

Oh and by the way we took an 08 with the first of our 2nd rd picks an 08 that is committed to NCAA for 27-28.

Is papineau a good scout? Can he find talent? Yes and yes. Can he build a team to contend and go deep from all the evidence it's a no.

We can't rely on an import goalie potentially which we may not have an import slot for currently we have 3 potentials for those slots Molnar, Chovan and Nemec.

The guy from the ohl draft show was really struggling trying to find things to say about the wolves picks.

Maybe it's RP last draft and he's just throwing the dart at the board
Provorov in particular was actually kind of funny. Just a "Yeah, wolves must love something about this guy" To be fair though, Darren in particular provides nothing of value in his analysis generally, just a lot of "good hockey IQ" "plays the game the right way"

Wolves grab a goalie to kick off day 2 Owen Leonard, from the titans, same team as their first rounder.

Wolves nab Kingston Harris(Kingston Harris - Stats, Contract, Salary & More) much much later then he was expected to go. Suspect there is NCAA concerns or something else, but seems easily worth it at this point in the draft. Was ranked top 25 pretty much everywhere I can find

From Brock's OHL Mock

12. Erie Otters (Ryan McArthur) - Kingston Harris, F
Erie will need help up front next season, as they are losing 170 points due to overage forwards Pano Fimis and Sam Alfano graduating from the league. Kingston Harris from the Toronto Marlboros is an excellent selection to help bridge the gap, being a 6-foot-tall two-way centre with elite offensive upside. Harris beats you with his blazing speed and can burn opposing defenders due to the bursts he’s able to generate with a strong lower body. Quick east-west horizontal movements make him elusive and difficult to contain off the rush, where he’s able to make plays to create scoring chances. Kingston has great hands and is highly skilled. He won most of his draws during this past season for the Marlies, and he finished the OHL Cup winning 63.3% of his faceoffs.

The players may have grown an inch or 2 since their height was taken earlier in the year
I would assume weight would increase as well, no?
