Sudbury Wolves 2024-25 Season Thread, Part IV

I always felt motivation comes from within. If you can’t get up for game #3 when your already down 2-0, we have bigger problems than the coaches.
It’s both parties. You have players who are not motivated, but you also have a coach who doesn’t motivate his team when they need the motivation. And I also don’t think there is a player or players who motivates the team either. I’m hoping Delic coming back gives them a spark and the MOTIVATION!

Why have a coach then? A coach is a manager of young men more than X and O’s. That’s his main job, getting them united and getting the very best out of them. You remember Ted Nolan? His players were always motivated and would go through a wall for him. Barney has a way to go before making me a true believer. Discipline alone is reason enough and doesn’t seem to get talked about enough. It speaks to accountability. They all seem to be talking the talk about brotherhood etc. Talk is cheap, let’s see them walk the walk.

Coaches responsibility: Create excellent team culture. Enhance skills and teach finer points of the game. Develop a style of play 5 on 5 and Special teams. Pre-scout teams and come up with game plans. Manage playing time and define player roles within the coaches system. Develop young players into young pros.
Hold players accountable for undisciplined play and breaking team rules.
Yes, motivation is part of the equation but players at this level and beyond must be self-motivating team first players to succeed.
Just my opinion.

A couple of thoughts on Mr Papineau's record.

There's one full regular season and two playoffs not reflected in his stats thanks to Covid and those were and would have been two very good hockey teams.

A short three years later we're back in the hunt. One important fact to remember - trades are made in the moment and the outcomes are judged on the result. The verdict should should take both into account.

In the moment of January 2024 the Wolves were top heavy on the O and had concerns on the D. In the moment everyone knew that it was a calculated risk to trade Protz. The result turned on the disastrous third period in game three against North Bay and the result justified both concerns - losing Protz and the leaky back end.

And here we are today. In the moment of January 2025 the choice was even chancier but Delic was on fire, Musty was back, the goaltending was rounding into shape and there's still a core of solid role players. As calculated risks go the deadline trades in the moment made sense. A player like Musty doesn't come along very often and there was one last chance to capitalize on that opportunity. There are some things a GM can control, there are a few more things he can influence but injuries don't fall into either category. Losing Musty and Delic took away some of the pieces of the puzzle that make a player like Mews stand out and he's now in the spotlight for the wrong reason.

This isn't over and it's now down to the twenty guys with the jersies on tomorrow night but Mr Papineau's done a lot of very good things to get himself into a position where he can be so harshly judged. I might not give him a raise but assuming he wants to stay I wouldn't be in a hurry to tear this apart.

A couple of thoughts on Mr Papineau's record.

Time is up Paps. Last season's debacle pretty much sealed his fate. He's been on borrowed time ever since, was given one last shot. Pretty much make it to the 3rd round/finals or bust. Needed a deep playoff run. Wolves can't even win a game in the 2nd round. It's embarrassing at this point, and extremely frustrating why the Wolves can never build a true contender. Just look up at the rafters and see the lack of banners for this storied franchise. It's pathetic. Anyways time for change and new direction with a new GM to come in and start from scratch with a vision and plan on building a championship caliber team.

On a positive tone, let's be loud and cheer on the boys tomorrow and hope the Wolves can get a win to send this back to Kingston

Up until the trade deadline, when the team was playing well, in every post game interview, the player and the coach talked about "the system", the "experienced coaching staff", and most importantly, "Playing the right way"!
Haven't heard any of those words for a couple of months now.

I don't want to make excuses but the second half of the Wolves Schedule was insane compared to the first half playing tougher teams. You can tell the team was dropping off in their play in the second half, I think fatigue set in. The month of February their were only 4 or 5 home games in the whole month

Looking back on the wolves draft selections over the last few years with Papineau at the helm, I think it would be an obvious choice to keep him around as he has had great results turning picks into OHL players. As stated above I also feel that with the way the first half went and having Musty showing up physically and mentally to the team, it was worth the shot to bolster the defense and snag Mews. Hindsight is 20/20 and it isn't working out as planned I'm sure. I hate seeing Protz excel in a different jersey, hate seeing BIshop eat up major minutes against us in the playoffs and losing Jackson will hurt for a while, but no risk, no reward. As a season ticket holder I am not happy with a first round exit but I am much more interested in watching this team progress with the current coaching staff than than the McKenzie era.

Put Marshall in, Delic is still hurt hope he doesn't put himself in a position to harm his future. Pharand doesn't deserve top line or PP minutes. Let Street play early and punish their D, put him in front of the net. Make Shenckel fight to see and get some shots. And lets cross our fingers the zebras don't give reason to deflect responsibility.

I think there is a misconception in Sudbury that Street is a feared player in the league and is much bigger and stronger then other players.
Aside from maybe Uens who will even dish it out, Street isn't going to be punishing anything.
Guys like Mcgowan, Pieninemi, Burns are so much more skilled then him they just turn on him when he commits to a hit and gets he embarrassed. and runs into the boards. -There is a reason he plays 4-6 Minutes a game. -He's a liability and his coaching staff knows it.
I know you guys get upset when anyone has any small bit of criticism towards you're team and report it to the mods but this is a hockey forum where these conversations should be able to happen like every other thread on this forum.

Not aware of any investigation.
Sudbury's social media team removed all the comments within a couple hours so it appears to be a non issue.
You could probably connect with their social media admin if you wanted details or insight into why they had to hide it. -It's to bad they didn't leave it in their comment's so people could see how pathetic that person is.

Thanks for the input, not sure we see it the same way or care though. I’ve never seen a series where the other teams’s posters feel the need to pollute our thread. Unless you come in peace without demeaning our players or adding intelligent discussion, I would think I speak for most of us when I say your’e not welcome. Sorry if there’s isn’t enough intelligent discussion to keep you occupied on your board and don’t play innocent, you’re stirring up shit and you know it.

Oh the humanity! What are you a child? You’re right saying “non issue”. You must be a joy for a teacher if you’re a parent. Why don’t you “scout” for other potential fans for your thread and to fill your rink.
