Post-Game Talk: Stupendous Stu offsets the broken Hyman

The very first thing he said was the first one wasn’t a penalty
It's strange that's how you heard it.

The way I swear I heard it was something like "I think it wasn't a penalty but I'm not sure, I'd have to rewatch it so dont hold me to it. Either way, I'm not really upset at any of the calls. When you battle hard, penalties happen, and we have to kill a penalty".

Are we really twisting what he said as official whining to the league?

Deboer looked absolutely demoralized in the post-game presser.

Not sure why anyone said he was complaining about penalties. He was asked about the penalties his team took, and said he didn't hate any of them, and blamed his players more than refs. Said Perry took the same penalty Benn did so it was evenly called.

I think Deboer's downfall this series is inability to make the tactical adjustments Nobby and Coffey are able to make. It's like our coaching is 1-step ahead of him.

I think they're playing a system like Florida where they're trying to establish a heavy forecheck, but all of our dmen lob a hail-mary to center ice where we have more puck support and numbers. It's exhausting all of their forwards, and they're caught behind the puck half the time furiously skating back.

(I noticed the Hurricanes copied this strategy in their last game which lead to their win).
Theres no coaching cure known, in history of hockey, for "none of our guys are scoring".

That eventually kills every team that is fatally snakebit. Redundant phrasing, i realize. ;)

The object of hockey, and particularly for forwards is to put the puck in the net. The Dallas Stars have clearly not discovered that purpose. They thought it was pointless peripheral circling and ozone possession for the W. lol

That said I agree and have said the Dallas puck dump strategy is horrible. They have forwards that should be capable of zone entries. Should... lst night Stars had a 3 on 1 and didn't even get a sog. Theres no coaching that solves that level of futility.

Disappointed in the Hyman injury, but at least it wasn't McDavid or Draisaitl like in years past. If those two are mostly healthy we still have a good chance.

While 11/7 might be an option if Ekky is ready to go, I'd be concerned about potentially losing another forward or going deep into OT. I'd start Jeff Skinner. It's hard to judge him from GM1 vs LA, half the team played awful. 1000 games deserves a second chance.

Stu is now 6th in GSAx in the entire playoffs. He was pretty much last in all goaltender metrics in his first three games. Unbelievable turnaround.

Even last season he had so many more bad games that he had trouble making it to .900 until the Dallas series and barely stayed above it. He's definitely better this year, as is the defense.

The one game in that stretch where he wasn’t stellar had this place melting down with posts that look extremely pathetic in hindsight. I wonder if those same posters will give him a little grace from here on out. Probably not.

I'm not going to count each and every single poster who bashed Stu, but the list was substantial and most of us seem to be heaping praise upon him for how he's been playing lately. See, when you have the ability to think critically, you can recognize when a player is performing well and when a player isn't.

I don’t mind seeing j. Skinner back in but I also wouldn’t mind a Matt Savoie appearance. Right shot with skill and tenacity. He could make an impact imo.
Philp, Savoie... . No way they put in a rookie in the finals when Ryan, Jones, Skinner and take out Rico? No chance.

Apparently he did some technical work with Schwartz during his time off when Pickard was playing…

…but giving credit to Schwartz might be a bridge too far lol.

Yup, it's not just the stats that give me confidence in Stu, he also clears the eye test and seems to have fixed all of his obvious deficiencies. And he seems faster. He has genuinely looked elite and not just sheltered by the D like I initially thought. I know the team has reduced rush changes...but he's been stopping those shots too, something I didn't even think was possible a month ago.

He’s basically playing like how RS Hellebucyk played, which was always his “upside comparison.” I guess management held onto that belief and are finally reaping the rewards.

Just go 12-7 and try to ease Ekolm back with 3rd pairing minutes.

RNH-Mcdavid-Frederic
Podz-Draisaitl-Kapanen
Kane-Rico-Arvidsson
Skinner-Janmark-Perry

Kulak-Bouchard
Nurse-Walman
Ekholm-Klingberg

Frederic gets his chance to prove his worth on the top line and try to replicate the Hyman role.

Too many men.

EDIT: I agree, a guy like Frederic needs a chance.

You know what that is an interesting thought. Maybe not Ekholm but how about Stecher? He’s about Hymans size, has wheels, maybe he could play power forward if we find were really missing that.

Crazy but who knows maybe
I was thinking about this last night, I could see if they go 11-7 that Nurse/Kulak might get the odd shift on wing, guys with good wheels that can get in on the forecheck, but are still able to come back and defend.

I know that Stu is playing well right now, but I still prefer that we dress a backup goalie, as opposed to the old 12-7-1. ;)

Hyman news is brutal but we have a legit top 6 player who can score goals waiting to get back in.

Place him where Hyman was and see how it works or just swap him with Kane/Frederic.

12-6 is a no brainer, don’t go 11-7 and increase mins for Connor and Drai, especially when we don’t need to.
So you think bring in Skinner?
