Post-Game Talk: Stupendous Stu offsets the broken Hyman

It’s mind blowing that in the third period with the Oilers already up 2-1 in the game and the series, they outshot the Stars 13-4.

That’s actually insane and something you basically never see at this level in games between two good teams.
It was rather surprising, in a good way. I was very nervous going into the third, as I thought that overall The Stars had been the better club all game, and then they were pressing early in the third while the Oil got caught running around a bit. A couple of icings by Edmonton. I thought, "Ah crap, it's going to be a butt-clench game down the stretch."

Then, suddenly, there was an awesome shift by the McDavid line, in about the third or fourth minute of the third period. They didn't score, but came close. And after that, it was all Oilers, all the way.

(This game reminded me a bit of the third period of game 7 vs. Philly in 1987. The Flyers were down by a goal... and I think they got 1 or 2 shots on net in the entire third.)

Not that I really want to do it, but I could see them going 11-7 to ease Ekholm back in.

Not sure that I want to go back to 11-7 though as having set pairs has so many advantages over guys playing with a different partner every other shift.
Yeah, I'd do 11-7 before bringing in Derek Ryan & I actually like Derek Ryan.
Not sure he has the foot speed to get in there.

11-7 to get Ekholm back into the swing of things is ideal for the rest of this series IMO.

We can survive without Brown and Hyman for another 1-2 games against Dallas. Losing either for a rematch with FLA would be a massive blow though.

Sometimes it's easier for a team that is being outplayed to make adjustments, but coaches should be preparing their players for that in the intermission.

I think you have to put Noah Philip in at some point. Henrique is struggling with his minutes at 3C, Janmark is not a natural C, and Nuge is playing too well to take him out of the top 6. We can get by vs Dallas, but Florida’s 3rd line of Luostorainen-Lundell-Marchand is eating teams alive. If we make it to the final, the top 6 battle will be close , especially without Hyman. We’ll need a faster C than Rico to face that Florida 3rd line, which is really another 2nd line for them.

Assuming Hyman is done and Brown is back soon, you can run this lineup, and increase Philip’s minutes if Henrique continues to struggle. Either that or Nuge at 3C:

Yes! Henrique just doesn’t have the foot speed. Bruce Curlock pointed this out in round 1 as well

What was the crowd chanting through much of the game. It didn't sound like Ottinger. Couldn't make it out what they were saying. Crowd had marbles in mouths. Drunk indecipherable chant. haha. I was gonna put subtitles on see if it picked it up.
My son and I were thinking this too...sounded like Skinner, but that can't be right

Outside of Gazdic and Bieksa, I don't think any of the SN panel likes or roots for the Oilers if you want my personal opinion. Then of course the TSN asshats are always leafs central.
I remember when Rob MacLean cared and was more pissy about calgary's goal being waived off than the Oilers winning the series with McDavid's OT GWG.
Even Bissonette is a loser. Seeing him 'cheer' for the oilers in the finals last year as a leafs fanboy as he attempted to get into the Oilers fan's pants aka the one that flashed her boobs was pathetic. f***, even PK Slewban has been cheering against us. f*** them all except Gazdic and Bieksa
Biz is an idiot. WTF did this guy do in his career? Everytime I see him in a video, he is right on that girl who flashed her ta tas. PK is another idiot. I wont listen to Ron MacLean, weasel. I'm a fan of Bieska and Gadzic

A tough blow losing Hyman but in the marathon called the NHL playoffs the probabilities of serious injury are going to catch up with you. I'm amazed that more guys aren't hurt given the number of hits (intentional or otherwise) that I see every game. One thing for sure, hockey is not a coward's game. You have to admire that quality in the guys. It takes great courage just to step on the ice (I might do alright for a shift or two if the players got me a chair that they could push).

That said, "next man up" means a lot to guys who are aching (not literally I hope) to play and I don't think there will be much of a letdown. Adrenalin alone is usually good for a few games when a player re-enters and desperately wants to make a difference.

Oilers will close it out on Thursday night but of course it will be one hell of a fight against a desperate team.

The question with Jeff Skinner is would he play hard and forecheck and clog the passing lanes like the players who are in? Oilers seem to have really dialed in on forecheck and own zone defense, not sure Knoblauch puts in a weak link to chase a few goals. Jones is my choice

Derek Ryan addition could be intriguing, just for his right handed faceoff ability and PK ability. Could help address a couple areas of concern.
Ryan looked done early this year and was average at best in the AHL, and I'm a fan. I'd only put him in sproadically, and that pushes the minutes up for the rest of our group, not sure it's worth the risk.

couple real dandies in this playoffs. GM 5 LA was a masterpiece, GM 4 & 5 VEG were great performances, everything in this series except 6-7 mins of 3rd in GM 1. This Defence they have assembled is unreal. I still remember the Dark days when everyone laughed at our defence
The “experts” are still laughing at our defence. Just ask Connor McDavid.

PK is a POS. You can see how frustrated he is every time the Oilers score on the Stars lol
