Post-Game Talk: Stupendous Stu offsets the broken Hyman

Am I the only one that wouldn't hate Derek Ryan drawing in? I've always thought he raised his game in the playoffs.

Yes, he's limited but he is capable of smart, low event hockey. He can kill penalties and take some faceoffs. He doesn't replace Hyman or Brown but he gives a coach 7-8 minutes of dependable, no panic hockey.
Given the next game is a potential elimination game, I’d be ok with him getting some shifts for all the reasons you list.

Sucks to lose Zack, hopefully this is something that he can quickly heal from.

Some interesting reading in this thread:

I enjoyed this comment:

And this one:

And of course:

There is a moral to this story. Sometimes it is best to just shut up and let things play out.
lots of fools in that fanbase in LA but to be fair, we were pretty glum after GM 2 . It was a pretty salty area inside HFboards on the Oilers board. Stu took a beating. We were already planning next years team

Derek Ryan's second year here, he'd have a good game every other game. Then he'd have a good game every 2nd or third game. Last playoffs, he was good initially and then rapidly mediocre. This year he's been nigh unplayable, but he's a RHC that wins faceoffs and would probably kill himself to will us to a win. Good options all around, as someone already posited, but I'd see Philp, J Skinner before him. He's ahead of Max Jones, and he's random-Edmontonian-lottery-conscription ahead of Josh Brown

Yeah, wanting to play Max Jones feels insane. I could see Knoblauch disliking Skinner's game enough to do it but I don't know.

It feels like with Brown and Hyman out we're probably going to have to find some more secondary scoring and it's not going to come from Max Jones.
I know Savoie is a black ace. Is Philp one too?

Such a gritty effort tonight. Probably their best performance in a competitive playoff game in this era.
couple real dandies in this playoffs. GM 5 LA was a masterpiece, GM 4 & 5 VEG were great performances, everything in this series except 6-7 mins of 3rd in GM 1. This Defence they have assembled is unreal. I still remember the Dark days when everyone laughed at our defence

Terrible but unsurprising news. Heal up Zach, next man up. No time for dwelling on it anymore but it just sucks for a guy that's one of the real vocal leaders on this team to not be able to finish the run with these guys.
Hyman was a vocal leader and rallied the boys after the Game 7 SCF loss last year, saying “we’ll be back”

It absolutely sucks, but he’s still part of the team. Whether on or off the ice, his impact will be made

Deboer looked absolutely demoralized in the post-game presser.

Not sure why anyone said he was complaining about penalties. He was asked about the penalties his team took, and said he didn't hate any of them, and blamed his players more than refs. Said Perry took the same penalty Benn did so it was evenly called.

I think Deboer's downfall this series is inability to make the tactical adjustments Nobby and Coffey are able to make. It's like our coaching is 1-step ahead of him.

I think they're playing a system like Florida where they're trying to establish a heavy forecheck, but all of our dmen lob a hail-mary to center ice where we have more puck support and numbers. It's exhausting all of their forwards, and they're caught behind the puck half the time furiously skating back.

(I noticed the Hurricanes copied this strategy in their last game which lead to their win).
The very first thing he said was the first one wasn’t a penalty

I've been wasting a ridiculous amount of times reading other fanbases takes on this run. There are still alot of people who think Edmonton is still running a garbage blueline.

In a way I get it. If I weren't watching every night, I'd be highly suspect of Stecher-Nurse, or that Klingberg was still capable of playing quality minutes, and I really knew nothing about Walman until he got here. And no one wants to ever give Bouchard the credit he deserves for whatever reason (including some Oiler fans).

In reality, though, this is the best blueline left in the playoffs.

no, Reinhart has been out last 2
Him and Mikkola are listed as day-to-day. I imagine we see both of them back in the finals, unless the Carolina-Florida series goes to 6 or 7. They'll probably both be back, but who knows how their injuries will affect them. Brutal news about Hyman, but losing Reinhart and even Mikkola is a much bigger blow to Florida.

I wouldn't say I'd hate it. But as a follower of Hockeys Future, it would be nice to see a younger player given an opportunity in the right situation. I'm confident in the coaches ability to assess his roster and inject who he feels gives us the best chance to win.

Florida defence is big and mean. Mikkola was very noticeable last year and this year he is better. Add Forsling, Jones and Ekblad to this mixture, they are tough

Walking out of the building the last 2 games has been interesting. Fans are happy but not giddy. Could be that the we had enough opportunities to cheer during the game or that the games were too early for any pre-drinking but mostly I think it shows that the fans, like the team, realize these are just wins 10 and 11.

Agree 100%. They work great together. I still laugh at the people stating we will never get anywhere with 2 guys doing all the scoring. First thing I say is " Do u actually watch the games? " Just check out the stats if u dont wanna watch. Everyone is scoring. Check out Walmans +/-. Very impressive

Not that I really want to do it, but I could see them going 11-7 to ease Ekholm back in.

Not sure that I want to go back to 11-7 though as having set pairs has so many advantages over guys playing with a different partner every other shift.
