Kings Article: Story on Brayden McNabb's improved play, added ice time

Very good article on Brayden, Gann. And nothing beats video. Appreciated that. He seems to be acclimating well, but it takes time.

That looks like Slava in the background of Sutter's interview.

Is it just me, or does McNabb look like he could be related to Crosby?

Too many people don't have any idea how long it takes for most young players to develop, especially defensemen, who take longer than forwards. Case in point: the boatloads of hate aimed at Muzzin up until his play late last season and into the playoffs proved them wrong.

I suspect McNabb's development will be very, very similar, and if it does, the same crap will happen.

And yes that is Voynov in the background. He was waiting for Gaborik to get off the ice (he was the last player skating) so that he could workout with John Stevens.

Nice article on McNabb. I haven't been stat watching lately, so I had no idea he's been contributing offensively as much as he has. Let's hope he can continue his upward trajectory with more peaks than valleys.

I don't like McNabb , I think his game is extremely limited. But I can even admit he is playing much better, solid and steady hockey.

I'm not getting my hopes up on McNabb. Last year I thought Ellerby was going to come in and do really well, but instead he petered out. McNabb might have a bit more potential but I'm not expecting much.

This. FOREVER.

Not every defenseman is Drew Doughty or Alex Pietrangelo, where they can step in at 21 and under and make a difference.

Outside of goaltenders, defenseman have the biggest adjustment to make from CHL>AHL>NHL in terms of speed and play away from the puck. I hate when you hear people talk about guys like Forbort, Pysyk etc. etc. as bust just because they haven't made the NHL at 21 or 22. Defense relies heavily on reading the game and if you aren't a high-end natural talent ala Doughty or Subban it can take much longer to get comfortable.

???

He's a big d-man with a long reach, who hits like a truck. He moves the puck very well and has a heavy shot. Which makes him great for the power play. He's definitely not limited.

And I love the combination of Sutter giving interviews, while Eminem is playing in the background, and Voynov is sitting there looking bored out his mind.

That's why players who can play good defense will always have a job somewhere in the NHL...because defense doesn't grow on trees. It takes years of experience at NHL-speed and not everyone can make decisions that fast...in fact it's unnatural. The few players who can and do it in the NHL are actually freaks of nature in that way, that they have NHL-strong bodies and have minds that can make correct decisions that fast.

He only needs to do two things: give opposing forwards the idea that not only won't they score, they will get beat the F up...err, pay a physical price if they carry the puck anywhere near him in the Kings' defensive zone; and when shoot it if he gets the puck on the PP. He's not a PP QB or control the zone...we got Drew and guys like Slava and Alec for that.

I like what looks like him (Voynov) picking his nose at about the three minute mark.

I love McNabb!!! I can take mistakes.... love his hitting... he has a good pass and good vision... assist on Matt Greene's goal?

On the McMuffin.... Muzzin eared a lot of hate last year by creating at least one great scoring chance for the other team per game.... this was further compounded by the Kings having the 29th ranked offense through most of the season. 1 break down would cost the game and oh look Muzzin just passed to the other team....

And the whole people don't know how long it takes D to develop... that wasn't the problem with Muzzin... the problem was can this guy put it together in a few months for a playoff run... Now, the answer is he pulled it off.... in December of last year it wasn't looking too good and there was reason for concern.

Here's the other thing I think a lot of us are forgetting--not just his development time on-the-job but his actual age. He's actually our youngest d-man. He's only 22. What was everyone else not named Doughty doing at that point? It's amazing how quickly he's come on.

He's also still, in a way, learning the system. This is a kid that came over to the team at the trade deadline, so he hasn't really spent that much time being in the Kings system.

What's exciting to me about the Kings defensive makeup is that it's evolving. A few years ago, it was 3 PMDs and 3 SAHDs. Mitchell could pitch in some offensively, but it's not like you could or would want to play him as a regular on the powerplay. Scuds, Regehr and Greene are a bit different defensively in terms of style, but you expected zero contributions on offense. Now, you can expect some offense from Doughty, Muzzin, AMart, Voynov (if he ever comes back) and McNabb while not sacrificing a lot in the defensive zone. I like the diversity. As an opponent, you also have to worry about Doughty, Muzzin, Regehr, Green and McNabb potentially wrecking you on a hard check.

The reason for concern was that he was in just his second full year in the NHL, the first one being abbreviated. Totally misplaced concern.

Actually, he's 23.
