This wasn't a fleecing by the Blues, but Waddell nonetheless unquestionably f***ed up. It's an easy textbook case.

Note that the both the AAV of Texier's previous contract ($1.525m) and the AAV of Texier's new contract ($2.1m) BOTH put him within the range of a 3rd round pick in RFA offer sheet compensation. And the fact that the
first news we had of this happening was release of the contract details is a very strong indicator that Texier and/or his agent were already talking with the Blues - which would have required Waddell's permission.
Given that, a 3rd in 2025 would have been the
bare minimum return, unless Waddell somehow got it into his head that Texier was going to give the Blues a discount and take a pay cut. Waddell got a 4th in that same year.
He unquestionably f***ed up. There's no excuse for it. Thankfully it's not a
large f***up, but it is a clear, unambiguous, and inexcusable one.
