I honestly don't understand why Chicago or Arizona or Anaheim wouldn't take a shot at him. Even Buffalo.

They get him for free and then he is signed for next season and if he continues at his current pace and is given a bigger role, they could trade him for an asset next season. But GMs are wierd.

I disagree. When Rust was playing like trash it was the perfect opportunity to bump him up in the top 6.

Hell when the team was playing bad it was a perfect opportunity to move him anywhere to try and get some success
No you misunderstand. Sully knows he's game isn't good right now. He's not blind. But he still wants to keep him around in a limited role to try to fix him.

Think of it like when we got Justin Schultz, used him as a limited role #6/#7 while his confidence was shot, and eventually turned him into a legit top 4 who made a major contribution to the 2017 cup when Letang was out.

Edit: Sully's comment on the move today. He blames himself for not getting the potential out of the player.

"When a team doesn't live up to expectations, change is inevitable. That's part of it. Kappy is a really talented player. To a certain extent, it's on all of us because we didn't find a way to maximize his potential."

He was a positive asset on the Leafs. Maybe it has to do with Pens coaching or system?
Sullivan did him no favors, sure. But every chance Kapanen got, he squandered. Incredibly low hockey IQ and response time. Absolutely no creativity with the puck and no ability to slow down the play. Spastic. Too dumb to take advantage of his only asset (speed). Maybe he finds another team and can add value again, and I will be happy for him, but it was not happening in Pittsburgh. I have no explanation for why he was given a 2 year extension as an RFA. We believe there is a massive disconnect right now between ownership, the GM and head coach.

There's been a massive disconnect with the coach and management since way back when JR got all hopped up on Tom Wilson juice and decided the team needed toughness.

The one common thread to these problems got an extension a year ahead of when he needed one and will be here forever.

Because the Penguins are in a bind and could cough up a pick (or take back $) if you make a trade with them.

It's on him though b/c he did in fact have all the opportunity to play him in other positions and situations this season

1 more year at $3mil AAV. Only way I see him getting claimed is by a rebuilding team that expected to have cap space next year.

I can see the Jets making a claim, they just announced Perfetti is out for the rest of the regular season.

Why would they claim him and bail out Pens? They should be compensated for taking such a gamble and utilizing valuable cap space

Bang up job with roster construction, Hextall. Extend the guy in the summer, and now waive him.

Exactly.

If this is a harbinger of more roster moves, and we're going to start cutting bait on this team WITHOUT trying a new bench boss first, I'm going to lose my shit.

He's really not a bad player...coaching usage completely nuked him.

Not saying he's anything special but the right team he's a decent 3rd liner.
We have so many injuries and just dont have much NHL scorers. It just make too much sense for us not to get him
