Stick Wax

I just use a cheap candle and rub it all over after I've taped my stick. It does a few things:

-helps keep the tape from getting torn up from the puck and other sticks
-reduces ice build up on the stick
-gives a bit of extra grip for the puck

Some people claim they don't notice a difference with it but I definitely do. All those hockey specific stick waxes are overpriced though. Just grab a cheap candle from a dollar store and you're good to go.

exactly, i mind it help seal the tape on the blade as well and it is less likely to just peel off through out the game.

I also wax the tape at the top of my stick for extra grip. and it makes the tape look cooler

and definitely makes the tape on your blade last longer before you have to retape it. / less snow/ice buildup.

the tape wont get as soggy, or stay wet as long as a non-waxed one. I use "golf wax". Its supposed to be for canning things but for 3 bucks you get 4 big pieces and it seems to work fine

I use to keep my tape from getting soggy, and usually when the tape job starts to fall apart the hardened wax allows me to just rip the whole mess off in one or two pieces.

It's not gonna turn you into Peter Forsberg though. I think the moisture reduction is the key advantage.

Pretty much what everyone else has said. It keeps your tape dryer a bit longer, it can help with snow build-up, and it might give a little more "stick" to the blade. I run with a couple different types. I use the Gulf Wax CGNY87 was talking about for the bottom of the blade. It's more like a candle wax, a bit harder than the other waxes I use. It gets a good seal on the pores of the tape and helps with water and snow. For the shooting area of the blade I alternate between Mr. Zog's Sex Wax and Mojo Wax. Both are softer waxes that you can sort of mush around with just the heat from your hands. They're quite a bit more tacky that the Gulf Wax, so you get some stickiness to the blade.

Wax isn't going to make you a superstar, but it just might save you some time with re-tapes.

agreed... cold water surf wax is what i use. Specifically Stickybumps. for $1.50 for a brick, i can't complain

Mr Zogg's hockey wax goes on well, a little thicker and it seems to make the blade slightly tackier if that's what you're into.

I bought a brick of paraffin wax at the hardware store for a few bucks. It goes on a lot thinner and is fairly slick. I rub the blade with it and melt it with a heat gun. It might not be as sticky but it repels water just fine.

The best part of paraffin wax is that it doesn't mark up your car. I had a sports car where I had to put the sticks across the seat to fit and the sex wax got all over my rear window and roof. Paraffin doesn't.

I use Blade Butter. I got bored one night and thought I'd spray some Scotch Guard on my tape then wax it and that seems to work even better.

+1

One day a guy on the other team was running late to one of our league games, about five minutes in during a stoppage he skates across the ice with his water bottle and a stick bag

Haha. I played with a guy who had multiple $300 sticks that he carried around in INDIVIDUAL stick bags. You know, cause they wouldn't get scratched in a game or anything... :sarcasm:

I use a stick bag to protect my car. Right now I'm driving a Mini Cooper so my sticks are my arm rest when I drive to games.

would beeswax work? or should it be paraffin based?
(I ask because I live a few miles from the largest beeswax candle maker in the country)

Man people "chirp" about some real stupid stuff. I'm glad I don't run into such puerile half-wits with a Messiah complex at my rink.

Yet another person who doesn't realize that "chirping" is mostly in good fun and almost never malicious. :handclap:

I never used it but my friend had an extra thing of Sex Wax so I am gonna try it next time I go out and I will report back.
