Pool: Statsy's WJC Pool - 13th Edition

Carson Rehkopf was officially added to Canada's roster, now just leaving Bjarnason on the outside. Not that it matters much as his pool replacement, Ivankovic, failed to even pick up points against Latvia. Hard to believe that a Canadian goalie, and a high pool pick at that, could end up being a pointless pick, but here we are.

Also, the IIHF owes me another assist for Jakub Dvorak. I thought they had moved to the last two touchers of the puck get the assists like in the NHL, instead of just the last two actual touches... if that makes sense. I guess they went back to that, or this one just got missed.

The only other thing that bears mentioning is the big 8 points by Tomsburninghat to get himself out of the basement. Won't be many pool points flowing in today's games with three of the teams being boycotted in the draft. But if you have a Slovak player, maybe this is your day!

It was a pretty good day for three of our poolsters with Slovak players. Canada4Gold, Christien and Tomsburninghat each pick up 4 points on the day with Pekarcik, and Dvorsky both exploding against Kazakhstan. Statsy also picked up a single today, while everyone else was inactive.

Christien now pulls into the lead with 27 but this race remains VERY tight. I would be remiss if I didn't welcome Tomsburninghat back into the race. After a rough start, two solid days of production now have him back into contention. Khabby seems to have the inside track on the 1st overall pick next year! He knew there was a good reason to vote for that.

The New Year's Eve slate of games is always a good one and it will conclude with the legendary Canada/USA game. Can't wait!

That's a wrap on 2024... and the preliminary round of this tournament. There continue to be giant standings swings every day as this has been one of the most back-and-forth pools I can remember. Today GrandLarseny and Statsy both ride big outings to the top of the table. GL had a shutout win from Rimpinen to cap a 9 point day, while Statsy picked up 8 points from multiple contributors. Following in third, just a couple of points behind, is WeThreeKings at 30 points. Christien (who had a quiet day to fall out of the top spot he held yesterday, is tied with FightingSioux for fourth spot. Everybody else was pretty quiet today. It's a day off from the tourney tomorrow, and then we start to play some elimination games that are going to separate the men from the boys, the women from the girls, and the butterflies from the moths.

Never a dull day at the WJC. Sometimes they are heartbreachingly disappointing... but never dull. Four teams fell today and one of them was Canada. Who saw that coming? Well, FightingSioux clearly did, as he didn't take a single Canadian pick this year. He is the only one that can claim that. I have put the Strikethrough notations on your tables so you can each take a a quick look at who has what left. Khabby, you still have Rocak who hasn't been struck, but he might as well be as the coach won't even let him dress for a game. You also officially got Jack Ivankovic's zero points today to replace the zero points from Bjarnason, who never did get added to the roster. Hope that helps!

GrandLarseny is the first to hit the 40 point mark, continuing to get great work from Rimpanen in net. Tied for second, just a point behind, we have Statsy and the Canadian-hating, FightingSioux. It was a double digit day for FS, as his USA guys in particular, had a stat day. CanadaNoLonger4Gold moves up a couple of spots to fourth on the strength of a solid 9 point QF day. WeThreeKings and Christien are both still within striking distance, but have lost significant contributors, which will make things tough. The race for the first overall pick next year (remember that?) is also still on, but Khabby has been doing a tournament long tank in order to get that rebuild going!

It's a day off tomorrow and then we start playing for medals. We'll see you then!

Figures the one year I go in on Canada, they are an utter disappoint fueled by one of the worst coaching performances since that Finnish dude got fired mid-tournament.

It’s not just that Canada had a down year… it’s that they looked they were especially stacked this year. They more supposed to score MORE than usual, not less. Hockey is a funny game sometimes.

Nevertheless, the tournament has been as good as ever, if not better. Most people hated when Canada would beat Latvia by double digits. This has been a strong year for everyone but Kazakhstan. It’s made for some pretty entertaining games.

And then there were two. It's Bronze and then Gold on the schedule for today! As for yesterday, what an amazing day for FightingSioux, who had his full compliment of players going (except a backup goalie). He collected an unbelievable 10 points in the two games to take a fairly solid lead into the final day. GrandLarseny and Statsy each collected 5 points to remain on the podium, still just separated by a single point. It's a big final day for both of them! Canada4Gold and WeThreeKings each picked up three assists to make up the next tier. They'll need a huge day to crack the top three though. Christien was leading not too long ago, but has gone cold. He picks up just a single point today and is now fighting off Tomsburninghat for 6th. Khabby is at 22 points. If he fails to record a point today, he ties the pool record for lowest final point total. However, he can console himself with thoughts of that sweet, sweet 1st overall pick next year!

GrandLarseny was able to hang on for the Silver, with Statsy coming in for the Bronze with 46 points. In the end, we finished the day in the same order we started as nobody was able to really pile up points today. The one extra bit of business we have this year, is that we now know next year's draft order. Congrats to Khabby for picking up top pick. You've got eleven months to mull it over. In the end, he finishes with a fairly comfortable 5 point lead, and is the only one to crack the 50 point plateau. It's his second pool victory in 3 years! GrandLarseny was able to hang on for the Silver, with Statsy coming in for the Bronze with 46 points. In the end, we finished the day in the same order we started as nobody was able to really pile up points today. The one extra bit of business we have this year, is that we now know next year's draft order. Congrats to Khabby for picking up top pick. You've got eleven months to mull it over.
