Always wondered legacy wise how good of a timing did Stastny had to have is best 10 season match a decade perfectly in that regard, did others players had the Would have had the most points during a stretch of 10 season would it not be of Gretzky that goes under the radars.

One is Adam Oates, from the 89-90 season to 98-99 Adam Oates has the second most points in the nhl after Gretzky, shift that performance from a season and maybe some narrative get constructed around that trivia for him.

In the history of the league, top 3 most points by windows of 10 year's, scored the Top 2 by their percentage of points of the third place.

Some of the most dominants windows of 10 year's (limited by one by player)
Gretzky (79 to 88): 187.4%
Denneny (17 to 26): 146.7%
Howe....(50 to 59): 146.0%
Esposito(64 to 73): 141.2%
Morenz..(22 to 31): 134.1%
Jagr....(97 to 06): 130.7%

Dionne..(73 to 82): 122.8%
Lemieux.(84 to 93): 117.0% (as a second place)

Obviously lock-out give a free pass for players to maintain a place here which is an issue.

Patrick Kane, Sundin, Selanne, Thorton, Iginla are some players that when looking into that prism look particularly good imo, often injured or short prime a la Forsberg, Lafleur less so.

The super constant and not missing game type (Howe, Gretzky, Dionne, Jagr, Esposito) look obviously super good that way and Statsny do indeed look a bit "lucky" legacy wise that it happened on round numbers of year to have that windows, if it is ever used above a Oates, Hawerchuck, Yzerman in a conversation.

Great research.

Some possibilities for the best player to never to appear in the top three:
  • Messier (Gretzky and Lemieux took up two of the three spots for most of his prime)
  • Malkin, Forsberg, Lindros, Bure and Schmidt (struggled with injuries and often didn't have consecutive healthy seasons)
  • Hull (outstanding three-year peak, but generally didn't record enough assists to rank too high)
  • Ullman, Perreault, Mahovlich, Delvecchio, Bucyk, Francis, Recchi (good, consistent players - I'd guess that most of them ranked in or just outside the top five)
Worst player to appear in the top three at least once? Probably Lorne Carr and Clint Smith (both of whom had a spike in production during the talent-depleted WWII years). Excluding them - probably Claude Giroux?

I thought both Hull and Beliveau would have ranked higher. Though one spot was taken by Howe pretty much all of their careers. Still, you'd think two players often ranked #5 all-time wouldn't rank behind Thornton, Sakic, Lindsay and Kane.

Also - amazing that Gretzky was the top scorer in four ten-year periods before he even played his first game.

  • Messier (Gretzky and Lemieux took up two of the three spots for most of his prime)

Victim of the deadly Gretzky-Lemieux-Yzerman trio, he has 2x 4th place behind those three, 85-86 to 94-5 and 86-87 to 95-96.

If we remove Gretzky-Lemieux -Howe and re-run the exercise, Messier-Brett Hull, Coffey get a big bonus being a top 5 often type in the Lemieux-Gretzky era do show up and Maurice Richard shine obviously, having the war followed by a Howe less field:

Ovechkin is possibly being boosted by the 2004 stoppage (but maybe not he as a huge lead over the 2 nearest player affected by the lock-out) and Crosby certainly is considering he would not have played anyway but it show up in a single windows and St-Louis lock out production if it does not affect the rest of is career to play that season would have bounced him out, Crosby/Ovechkin have good change to do 2013-2014 to 2022-2023 to compensate, Marchand needing to score 62 more points than Crosby before then end of this season to bounce him, Kane will also probably do it and McDavid should start is long "reign" of showing up already even if it is just is season#7.

Yzerman not moving by removing 2 direct rival is a let down and again those 2 do not fully simply explain is gap with Sakic.

Also from the start of the 2013-2014 season to now, Ovechkin is third in points while being in is own zone in goals obviously, in term of offensive production him and Crosby for their post peak era are still quite impressive and generational in that regard do seem to apply for how rare it has been to produce relative to your peers after your peak in over 100 season of the nhl.

Claude Giroux, if I recall (and hockeyreference makes you sign up and pay for this service on their website now) had more points than anyone in the NHL over a 6(?) year span from 2010 to 2016. Much of this was based on injuries to Crosby, Malkin and then Ovechkin had that mid season slump. But still, wow!
