I was thinking Masalskis over Irbe , Masalskis strong play at last years worlds being a factor.

Irbe: 6 GP - 283 min - 124 SOG - 7 GA - 117 SVS - 94,35 SV% - 1,48 GAA - 2 SO
Masalskis: 2 GP - 76 min - 49 SOG - 11 GA - 38 SVS - 77,55 SV% - 8,79 GAA

Are those the numbers from last years Worlds? If they are i'm firing my staff. ;)

I'd say NItty for Finland
Khabibulin for Russia
Esche for USA
and im not sure about SLovakia or the Czechs

Philly fan aren't we? ;)

I don't think neither Nitty nor Esche will be a starter.

If Slovakia had any balls...

they would make a power move and somehow steal away that mezei guy from belarus. tell me he is not better than anyone who has started for sweden in the past ten years. I keep hearing BS about Valent and Halak, but where are these guys??? Looks like Budaj this year, please not Lasak, he is sooooo soft.

I wouldnt rule it out

Ryan Miller would be the best choice for USA, too bad he isnt on the team. I see no reason why Esche wouldnt play ahead of DiPietro. DiPietro put up good stats in Austria but so did Conklin there and in Prague, they both are not gonna get the Ws for you and Esche might. He did a good job backstopping us in Toronto in 2004, DiPietro gave him the night off only once that I remember.

I would start Lehtonen but I dont think he is a lock.

And the Starters are

ITA - Muzzatti
SUI - Gerber
GER - Kolzig
KAZ - Kolesnik
LAV - Irbe
SVK - Budaj
CZE - Hasek
SWE - Lundqvist
USA - DiPietro
FIN - Lethonen
RUS - Nabokov (If Khabibulin can't go)
CAN - Brodeur

According to today's newspaper (Iltalehti) here in Finland, Lehtonen's olympic trip could be in danger. Atlanta isn't very happy with Lehtonen, who's still having problems with his groins, playing huge load of games in just few days. So I think Niittymäki could after all be our starter.

:shakehead Esche can't even secure the starting job on his own team. DiPietro played great in the Worlds and although he is struggling, he is currently playing behind the worst defense in the NHL (except maybe Pittsburgh's.) He has proven that he is plenty capable to play against top tier teams and will be the starting goalie for the US until he loses the job.

If the Slovakian team have done any scouting they should start Karol Krizan. He is totally dominating in the Swedish Elite Leauge and after 39 games not done a SINGLE misstake. I have never seen such a consistent goaltender for quite some time. It was only Lundqvist that came close I guess to his consistency.

His record this season for MODO is 39GP, 2.01 GAA and 93,35%.

BTW. For ONCE Sweden has got better goaltending (on paper) than the Finns :)

The thing is, his reputation in here is different among many and if he were the starter, people here would revolt (literally).

He wont be the starter for sure.

He SUCK at practice and pre-games (training games) but is absolutely awesome when it comes to the big games. He say himself that it's hard to be motivated to play games when they don't mean anything :)

He is the best goaltender to ever play in my team and one of the best I've seen in the SEL. So he should easily outperform Lasak. Lasak isn't near as consistent as Krizan.

Anyway, I hope Budaj is the starting G as he has the most NHL experience.

Although I think Lasak will be the starter.

Anyone care to rank the participating countries based on their theoretical starting goaltender?

My rankings (Based on current play, not historical):

1) SWE - Lundqvist
2) CZE - Hasek
3) FIN - Lethonen (If he plays)
4) CAN - Brodeur
5) GER - Kolzig
6) RUS - Nabokov
7) SUI - Gerber
8) USA - DiPietro
9) SVK - Budaj

Havnt seen these guys play, so they can fall in any particular order at the bottom:

ITA - Muzzatti
KAZ - Kolesnik
LAV - Irbe
