Did Tyler Bertuzzi just forget how to play hockey? We've wanted to acquire this guy for years and he's been a total dud as a Leaf.

Bertuzzi might be one of the lowest IQ players I’ve ever seen. Puts in a decent amount of effort for absolutely 0 result constantly.

I noticed a couple decent plays from him. He's been OK, which is fine. Lagesson has been pretty good.
Lagesson has really come up big, considering we expected nothing from him on the big club. Keeping it simple and steady. Thankfully too, we need some depth.

He kills every line. He doesn’t gel anywhere

He has yet to find any role or place on the team

Rewatching some replays of the goals allowed again:

1st goal. Week play by Bertuzzi on the boards starts this mess. Tavares in his zone can't decide which player to engage with so he just sits in the lane and doesn't take anyone. Bertuzzi, despite not doing much, got tied up on the board and wasn't there to backcheck and I'd like a save there. Maybe it was the end of a shift, but all 3 forwards didn't show much effort getting back.

2nd goal allowed. Why are all 3 Leaf forwards on the far side of the ice for so long? Nylander can't be that far to the right when no one is covering the left side of the ice (Tampa had guys there on the rush). then even in the D-zone, Giordano fades to the far side again leaving his zone open on the left. They really don't know how to stay positionally where they should be and its so easy for the opponents to find open spots on the ice because the Leafs (mostly the forwards) just float seeming to wherever they want to.

3rd goal allowed. Good shot, would like a save there. Not a huge fault of anyone, but they seemed to be over-rotating a bit. Stay a little more sound positionally and Kucherov won't be so open or have so much time.
The most disturbing thing here is Paul comes and parks himself in front of the net...providing a major screen AND having both hands free to deflect a shot or be right there for a rebound. He is there for at least 10 full seconds before the goal is scored without anyone even noticing him.

4th goal allowed: PP, again over-rotating, they don't know what each other are doing out there. Puck goes to the near boards side, both Toronto defenders face and chase the pass there, leaving Point wide open for the shot.

To me, The Penalty killers chase the puck instead of holding the box together, and its like they have no coaching or ignore the coaching because too many times they get easily turned around or 2 players are drawn out of position at the same time leaving someone open.

As far as the forwards, awful positioning, no one stays on their side of the ice, they just float round, not much effort to backcheck (its almost like if they see 2 leafs D-men in the zone, they figure that is enough and they don't have to skate hard to get back).

Matthews is just going to have to outscore the lack of effort and the mistakes made by the rest of the team.
