Pronman's thoughts:

Tier: Projected to play NHL games

Skating: NHL average
Puck skills: NHL average
Hockey sense: NHL average
Compete: Below NHL average
Shot: High-end

Analysis: Hemming was a very good player at the Finnish junior level and for Finland’s U18 team. He got time in Liiga and with the world junior team, although both were in limited-minutes roles. Hemming has a lot of offensive talent. He’s a highly skilled winger who can skate well. He is dangerous in transition, creates a lot of controlled entries and can break open shifts with his skill. Hemming can make plays and see openings develop, but his shot is his best weapon. He can rip pucks from range and will be a legit goal-scoring threat versus top goalies. Like a lot of goal scorers, Hemming can lean on his shot too much and stays on the outside. The lack of interior offense and inconsistent effort are the only things keeping me from tabbing him as a potential middle-six forward.

Pick grade: B-

Thoughts on the pick: Hemming is one of the better natural goal-scorers in the draft with a solid overall talent level. He frustrated scouts at times with his consistency and lack of playmaking, but there’s no doubting he can be an NHL scorer if he hits. He has a little more size than some of Dallas’ other top forward prospects, which helps. His game rubbed me the wrong way, but I see the path to him being a middle-six forward.

BPAers are going to hate this, but talk to me again about the RWs in our system with NHL potential

He checks a couple of boxes: RW and a good shot

Seems most scouts view him as a 3rd line guy at his best though and in the video Starry shared the guy doesn't think he's the type of 3rd liner contending teams will like to have. Hopefully he gets some good work in over the next few years

Hemming was basically 4th line winger in TPS last season
that's why he didn't get much ice time and being honest i was a bit surprised
he went undrafted in CHL import draft last year but hopefully that will change next Wednesday.

I'm not sure playing 4th line minutes again in TPS
is best environment for Hemming's development to NHL player.
That's why if he gets drafted to CHL next week Stars should put him there

Boom or bust type, love it.

Either he figures out his compete/skating/middle ice attack and becomes a top line player, or he doesn't. Dallas will give him the tools and time to figure it out.

Yep. Those of you who wanted a Bork style "he makes it or he doesn't" pick, this is right up your alley.

Again, teaching people to do anything else on the hockey rink is possible. Teaching them to score goals is a quixotic task.

One other thing to bring up is this continues the trend of the Stars targeting late birthdays: June 27th 06.

They want the youngest possible guys competing at levels above their station

Alot if the things he gets knocked for are Intangibles.

Getting in the pro system allows coaching deployment to improve those.

To have natural skill that generally can't be taught is a big asset.

Great pick, need a true RW too

There seems to be at least 4 shift-by-shifts on youtube (2 in the Liiga, 1 at the Hlinka and 1 at the U18s) so it was nice to be able to watch him a bit this morning. Though TPS has a terrible camera angle sadly.

The effort and the skating itself seemed good to me, he thinks the game slowly however. Doesn't seem to have great off puck movement or vision and he's a bad defender at this stage. I guess this is more of a developmental pick so we'll see but right now his game kind of rubs me the wrong way.

Maybe and maybe not but we'll see that with a time for sure.
That what i saw Hemming 5 games in U18 WJC's this past april was OK.

But as a goal-scorer Hemming is not Patrik Laine type goal threat.
Hemming's shot is very good but not a laser or rocket like Laine's shot.
Laine can score 5 vs 5 and powerplay in U18 WJC's Hemming scored all his goals in powerplay.

Hemming is a bit one-dimensional as a goal-scorer
and he's pure powerplay specialist which is not bad by any means.

But i'm not so sure of that is staying to TPS best for Hemming's development.
In SM liiga game is slower and ice bigger that's why all teams play defense first.

Hemming is good and young promising player but still raw.
That's why i think playing in CHL would prepare him better to NHL than staying to SM liiga.

Yeah i know Miro played one year in SM liiga after his draft and that's possible for Hemming too.
But i read Hemming's pre-draft interview in NHL.com and that interview he said
he's ready to come North America if his NHL team wants it.

Hemming has 1 year left of his liiga contract with TPS
but usually there is a clause which allows player to leave NHL.

So lets see what happens that's for sure right now everything is wide-open
and there are more open questions than answers.

That's why i wanna see Hemming in CHL because playing against his peers
gives better knowledge for Stars management what type player
they have in Hemming than playing against men's

SM liiga today is absolute crap
and the game there is more soccer on the ice than actual / real hockey.

I just want to see him with better quality linemates. His best work was with Helenius, Kiviharju, and Vaisanen. Players I’m not high on at all. But yeah 4th line in the Liiga isn’t ideal.

I’m pretty happy with the pick and think he has a higher ceiling than he’s getting credit for. His D+1 will be telling though

I worry about his hockey sense. I don't see a ton of it in the shift-by-shift videos.

I see a lot of NHL level skills and a strong motor. Good effort all over the ice, solid skating, elite shot.

But I do notice a distinct lack of passing and vision. That's just not gonna work at the pro level. And if that doesn't develop within the next year or two, it most likely never will.
