Sportsnet: Stars and Hawks talking Seth Jones

The cap is expected to go up by 30M in the next 3 years

Oettinger is getting a 4M raise, Robertson& Harley are max looking at 4-5M raises in their next contracts. Heiskanen and Hintz are locked up for longer at below market value

Then you look at:

Benn 9.5M gone after this season
Seguin 9.85M gone after 2 seasons
Marchment 4.5M gone after next season
Dumba 3.75M after next season
Dadonov 2.25M gone after this season
Suters buyout money gone after next season

So they can definitely keep the band together and add a quality/high end player. Especially if they can drop Dumbas contract

Johnston will go from elc to real money but there’s zero chance he’s getting a superstar deal this offseason

Their cap is in pretty damm good place
Ok

If this trade happens, it has all the markings of one of those:
"This guy stinks, overpaid albatross" to "Wow, this is one of the best pairings in the league! We cooked!"

I think Jones was dealt a bad hand and a half going to the Hawks. Does anyone who's not a Hawks fan even know what they're playing on their backend every night? I had no idea they had the ghosts of TJ Brodie and Alec Martinez out there doing cardio every night.

If Jones went to that stacked Stars roster, the view of him around the league would do a 180, and I'd put big money on that.

As a Hawks fan I concur with this. Stan put him in a no win situation.

I don’t think any proposal made in this thread has been bad, and all are pretty reasonable imo. That doesn’t happen to often, so kudos to Hawk fans.

I wasn’t a fan of the idea the Stars were potentially in on Jones, but I’ve warmed up to it. If you put him in a DeBoer system that is big on defense first, I think he can strive.

He's just been up and down, has stretches where he looks great, stretches where he looks awful. I imagine all the losing has worn on him. I imagine he would welcome going to Dallas (or Colorado).

For a return we could take on some bad money and then really looking for a forward prospect and a late 1st. Wish Hemming was having a little better of a season but can't say I've watched a lot of Barrie to even see him. He was decent at the WJC.

To Dallas:

Seth Jones with 25% retention

To Chicago:

Emil Hemming (late 1st rounder)
Matt Dumba
2025 1st Round pick (it will obviously be late in the 1st round as well)

Two late 1sts and a bad contract seems pretty fair.
Dallas traded their 2025 1st in the Granlund/Ceci deal.

Also think that if a first is involved, Hemming won't, or vice versa. Also. Jones' NMC and the small amount of teams that can fit him in their cap this season means that Chicago likely won't get that kind of value for him.

He would be Great in Dallas. Hes been a punching bag in Chicago because of the contract. Hes the 2nd best player on the team right now.

How would Star fans feel about

To :stars
D Seth Jones (2M retained)

To :hawks
D Matthew Dumba
C Oskar Back
Stars 2026 1st

Stars get Jones at $7.5M cap hit going forward while Hawks pick up a 1st in 2026 and a young bottom 6 C who can win a faceoff

We saw Hawks reportedly have interest in Ivan Ivan in Colorado so someone like Back would make sense here and provide Hawks a young natural C who can play C in NHL (We dont anyone like that on Hawks/Hogs at this point)

Yes I would do that deal. Hate dipping into the 2026 draft pool already, but with Jones I don't think Dallas has a weakness (especially if Seguin returns).

Robertson-Hintz-Johnston
Marchment-Duchene-Seguin
Benn-Granlund-Stankoven
Dadonov-Steel-Bourque
(Blackwell)

Heiskanen-Jones
Harley-Lyubushkin
Lindell-Ceci
(Bichsel, Smith)

Seth Jones retained down to $5.75MM ($3.75MM retained per year which is 39.5% of his AAV) for Dumba (dump) + 2026 1st (top 10 protected) + Lian Bichsel - really big LHD defender (2022 18th overall pick) + another bad expiring contract to make cap math work?

This is probably the one that makes the most sense and best value for both teams. Will be a shame to lose Bäck, he’s really carved out a nice role with Dallas already and has room to grow his game. Dallas is stacked at C so they can easily put Steel there and not miss a beat.

$2-2.5M in dead cap for next 5 years with cap rising is not really a lot of dead cap

Hawks also aren't pressed for big extensions outside of Bedard for several years at this point and right now are not spending to cap during rebuild

It's not really the dead cap as much as it is the raw money.

At 25% Chicago pays him $10.25M. At 50% they pay him $20.5M.

Cap is irrelevant because they'll be an ELC riddled team for several years in the future. The problem is convincing an NHL owner to throw away $10.25M-$20.5M to pay a player who isn't playing for them.

Really insulating bedard guys just give him a full ahl line up at this point.

No way Nill moves Bichsel, nor should he. He's gonna be fantastic.
