Confirmed with Link: Staple: Strait signs 3 year contract

3 year deal at $775K per, so its not exactly a risk. I'd say under a mill for a solid, NHL-quality defense man is a great bargain.

Right on. Good motivation for Hickey, that's for sure.

I think it also may be a sign that Visnovsky won't be here long. Streit, Strait, Hamonic, MacDonald, Hickey, Carkner, Martinek...not bad.

Snow has been really good at identifying talent and signing them early. This could again turn out to be another great contract. When you have to operate on a shoe string budget players/contracts like this are vital.

Good signing - even with the limited sample size. Low cost, low risk for a player that should be a 5/6 D man next year. This should also result in some good will/loyalty from Stait given that the team is showing him some love after being a waiver pickup.

Nice move - nothing for anyone to get in a tizzy about.

Wow, surprised, but very happy. Great deal for us. Not as good as the AMac contract, but along the same lines for a similar player. Very very happy.

Good move for both sides. Snow is able to find yet another waiver wire contributor and Stairt finds a teams that offers opportunity and a chance to be a "go-to-guy" so to speak.

Believe it or not, I'm going to trust the Islanders here. For all the **** Snow gets, he has shown that he knows a lot about guys in the lower levels. As many have said, we have been targeting Strait for awhile and when the Isles staff saw how well he has played thus far they took the calculated risk of locking him up on a similar contract to that of MacDonald. Being aggressive here is a good thing, and Strait is looking like a good player.

Also, as @Schultz88 mentions, better him than the usual scraps we pick up at the end of the free agency period.

I feel a lot better about the potential of our blueline with Strait and Hickey on board. Still could use another big, mobile body but this is a solid improvement.

After watching him play thus far and also reading over the posts at the Pitts board and how upset they were to have lost him i really believe we gained a very good player and at a very fair price. The deal is short/long enough to ensure our prospects get time in at bridgeport and not have to rush them up considering we will have AMAC,Hammonic,Striet and Strait hopefully being our top 4 til there ready. We all know what Carkner is and Hickey can maybe find himself in the 5/6 slot with him. Pretty happy and hopefully we can pull in 1 more legit dman and replace Carkner and really have a very solid 6. Like a poster stated before..It's very difficuly to have a #1, most teams don't so 6 quality dmen is just as important i believe.

The more I think about it the more I like it.. When you look in comparison that Eaton, Juice and Staois all made more than double Straits salary its an even better deal.. Lets just hope he keeps up the good play.

What an awesome job by Snow from grabbing him to locking him up to a great contract. Strait has looked every bit the NHL D-man. Dare I say he has reminded me of KJ??? Now, if only 1/2 of our top prospects pan out (Nino, Strome, Nelson, De Hahn, Donovan, Griff)....

Snow has truly done an amazing job with the waiver wire. Moulson, Grabner, Nabakov, Strait. Even the haters have to give him some kudos here...

A really stupid question: did the new CBA change any of the terms on the 50-contract limit? If not, where do we stand at this point on that limit?

He will.

My exact quote from way back when was "If Nisky or Strait are wearing another uniform next year, I'll lose my ****ing mind"

Needless to say, I went a little crazy when he was put on waivers, because I knew he would get picked up.

Sincere congrats to Brian, and congrats to you guys. You have an NHL ready defenseman on the cheap for the next three years. He won't stand out, but Brian's just about as solid as it gets for a #5/6, with the potential to be a good #4 with a little seasoning.

Again, good for you guys. I will always root for that guy.

Congrats to Strait. This reminds me of the Andrew MacDonald contract. Isles gave MacDonald the security of a 4 yr deal, after only 40 or so nhl games and he signed on the cheap.

Same for me, another AMac who's an unheralded mini-star on this Isles team. These are the types of roles that any successful team needs to have in place, something the Isles have lacked forever. Great signing.

Anyone worried about it being "just a few games" - I wouldn't worry. It's a great contract for a guy who's played well in the AHL and has looked AT WORST like a 6-7 dman in the NHL, frankly looked like a pretty reliable player 5on5 and on the PK!

Let's not forget what Paul Martin and Jeff Finger and Mike Commodore got in the UFA market. This was a smart move and a very low risk move and certainly one that Wang can approve.

Good for him and you guys, still pissed that Shero let him go in favor of ****ing Ben Lovejoy:shakehead

very surprising move. I don't see anything in Lovejoy to warrant keeping him, Engelland at least fights (though also kinda useless). Then again, Lovejoy was a little more of a "proven" commodity than Strait.

It's a bit like the Islanders waiving Wishart and keeping a guy like Eaton around.

I'm very happy with what I've seen from Strait so far, very pleasantly surprised. The Pens have a pretty solid defense group and a lot of prospects, so I can see why Strait wouldn't get a shot. Despres looked pretty good and I'm sure losing Niskanen wasn't fun.

Good dman. I mean real good.

Never be a star clearly, but he played a relatively tough game @ Pitt and has just been steady and solid.

That could all turn on a dime, but I think the Isles have some good depth.

Another good waiver wire pickup. Now, if the Isles could draft just as well.....

One less dman to get signed this summer. Now we have Carkner, MacDonald, and Strait signed.

Good news for our blue line. Good motivation for Hickey.

Things just got more interesting for Martinek and Vis.
