That's what I've been saying! I think this could be the worst generation of goalers I've ever seen in my entire life. I did not watch any '70s or '80s hockey though so it might honestly be worse then, but I can't compare...

Seriously, if they don’t fix that shit, NHL is gonna become unwatchable. What’s the point of watching games, specially paying money to go see playoff games when you know there are teams who doing this LTIR crap and have a massive advantage over other teams? Because it's a CBA issue. And while you can have independent doctors do whatever medical exams to clear a player, you ultimately can't force them to play if they insist they are still hurt.

Might as well just get rid of the salary cap. League can have 4 good teams like the mlb. That’ll be good

Just change the salary cap to be enforced on the on-ice roster, and through the playoffs. You have players worth of 150mil on your roster, but can only ice whatever the cap ceiling is.

Which is why it has been said that nothing will be done about it until the next CBA is negotiated, because it requires that. I was just spitballing potential solutions for when it's topical.
Once again, the irony in all this LTIR bullshit is that some years ago Tampa brought up this issue. They were the only team that wanted to have this "loophole" closed. No one else bothered. What did Tampa do literally a year (or two) after nothing was done? They pulled the LTIR stunt with Kucherov.

And even if you 'close' it, teams will find a different way to exploit. It is just what happens, if you aren't pushing the limits, you aren't trying. Whether it be 15 year contracts, LTIR, 500k salaries when you're 58, etc. Teams will always find a way.
I don't blame Tampa at all. They offered a solution, it was shot down, so they just simply played by the rules as they were established.
When Round 2 is here, the Avs will also be $7m above the cap too.

If it was up to me, I would do a big revamp of the whole salary cap system. Firstly, get rid of the hard cap. There are many different ways you can go about it. What I would like to see is a way for teams to be able to easily hold on to homegrown/groomed talent. The current model sucks hard in the way that when you actually become a good team, you need to start throwing players over board. It sucks, and we know it great first hand because we had to get rid of Kadri. If we had a way of using a designated player slot for a player like MacKinnon, maybe that could've been avoided. Or luxury tax, or something.
It will never happen, because Bettman and the majority of the owners love the current parity in the league (and more importantly, hard cap keeps the costs in line). But one can dream...

One could reasonably argue the relative success of non-traditional franchises and the overall financial health of the league is primarily due to this cap system. The fact that the worst off team now with Arizona moving is Winnipeg, is a great sign for the overall health of the league. They whole Covid year where the vast majority of revenue was lost was rebuilt within years shows how strong the league is doing. There is a legitimate thought to if it isn't broke, why change it?
IMO the next CBA is pretty simple... Olympic participation, escrow, and HRR split. There will be some give and take around those issues that could be thorny and could cause a lockout, but the vast majority of the CBA will be just keep it as it is.
